5 of 5 Nice touches Tuesday, March 03, 2009 NearChaos from Ellicott City, MD
I really like the hardware. I had a page scanner way back in the Windows 95 days, which I bought for the space savings. But it had this giant serial dongle and power pack due to the technical limitations of the time.
This little guy powers from USB, so it has neither. Another really neat feature is that when you stick a page in, the scanner advances the paper just a bit to grab it, which is helpful in low space situations, where the page might be hanging off the end of a table and you would otherwise have to hold it. I also like the fact that the paper path is very flat.
Note that on the cover of the PDF manual and in some of the marketing pictures, they show a document feeding face up. In reality documents feed face down. Not a real criticism, just beware your first scan.
I also like the extras in the box, especially the carrying bag. So many portable products don't come with any case at all, this is a nice touch. And while I know the cleaning pad is just a bit of foam, and the photo holders are simple plastic sleeves, it still cost them a few pennies in the box and they did it anyway. Nice touch.
No printed manual, you need the PDF on the enclosed CD. I like the fact that the small system tray application can output to PDF. However, the software is the weak point. It works but the user interface is cheap and a bit wonky. For instance, if you have it set to load on startup, if you double click the desktop icon it starts a second copy of the program, rather than running with the first that's already in the task tray.
Works fine on Vista. Scanning quality is really excellent. For a full page scanner I suppose this is as small as it can be...while I can get it in my large computer backpack, people with briefcase-style cases may not be carrying it along anytime soon.

Works extremely well. Images and text are as they should be. I have used it primarily for document scanning to PDF. It work superbly. The only complaint that I have is the feed. It can be a challenge to feed documents squarely into the scanner. It feels as if there is only one feed roller. Aside from this I am very satisfied. If you have a little patience this is an excellent value. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Handy scanner Wednesday, December 05, 2007 B. Knight from Harper, KS
Ordered this to use with my laptop mainly for genealogy purposes. It is very easy to set up and use and does a good job on documents. Pictures scan with light vertical lines through them and are a little grainy. Maybe I don't have a setting correct. It is acceptable for what I bought it for, but if you want a good picture, I wouldn't recommend this item. Overall, I am satisfied and since it is small, it is very easy to carry in the laptop case with me. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Pntax DSmobile Scanner Friday, November 30, 2007 Joe Salvador from Santa Cruz California
This scanner works great, I installed it on one laptop with Windows XP and one with Windows Vista Business it operates perfectly on both operating systems. It's cool because it will scan multiple pages into an Adobe format which makes it very easy to attach to emails. The other thing is thier tech support is wonderful, they have a phone number on their website. http://www.pentaxtech.com/ Their tech support is in Colorado USA they answer the phone and are very knowledgable. I called the tech support line before I purchased the product just to check. Try that with other portable scanners on the market. Was this review helpful?
