Patch Adams (Robin Williams) is studying to be a doctor at the Medical College of Virginia. He begins to entertain hospital patients at bedside in defiance of the strict rule prohibiting such contact before the third year. His outrageous antics put him in conflict with the stuffy medical establishment, particularly the dean of the med school. Although Patch has high grades, the dean declares him not cut out to be a doctor and accuses him of practicing medicine without a license. Patch's graduation and future as a doctor are at risk because of his firm belief that laughter is contagious.

Editor's Note

Tom Shadyac's (ACE VENTURA) film tells the true story of Hunter "Patch" Adams (Robin Williams), an aspiring doctor in the 1970's who attempted to treat his patients with a medicine that modern science had totally disregarded: humor. After a stint in a mental hospital where he discovers his need to help others, a young Patch enters medical school. There he develops his own methods of reaching patients as an antidote to the the pomposity he witnesses in his instructors and fellow students. While his patients and fellow staff members appreciate his approach, the powers-that-be frown upon his "unschooled" methods and attempt to prevent him from practicing. Philip Seymour Hoffman (MAGNOLIA) and Monica Potter (ALONG CAME A SPIDER) co-star in this crowd pleaser based on a book by Adams.

Patch Adams is a perfect vehicle for Robin Williams. He again plays the compassionate, manic clown that has been his main character throughout his movie career. And audiences love his wild end runs. Williams has an amazing knack for breathing new life into his persona, and Patch Adams, opening today, is a fine showcase for his talent. Only Williams could could play the part (although he seems too old to be a medical student). - Peter Stack

...this is Robin Williams we're talking about, and he brings a magic and charm to this character that no one else could. The film's best moments come at the beginning when Patch is self-committed at a mental institution and helps his roommate overcome his fears of imaginary squirrels by shooting them with an equally invisible bazooka. The supporting cast is also noteworthy, though romantic interest Monica Potter (Without Limits) plays the ice queen with such steely resolve that it would be tough to fathom why Patch would even be interested in her if she didn't so closely resemble Julia Roberts. Philip Seymour Hoffman (recently seen stalking Lara Flynn Boyle in Happiness) plays Patch's suspicious roommate with an intimidating intensity. Patch Adams succeeds in putting a twinkle in your eye. - Annlee Ellingson

5 of 5 Great Robin Williams Monday, January 19, 2009
A Viewer from Milwaukee, WI

You expect humor in a Robin Williams performance, although he has made rather "dark" films. This movie is the perfect balance between humor and seriousness and shows the brillant actor Williams truly is.

This is one of those movies that makes you laugh, but also makes you think. Very good performance by Williams.
