Released shortly after a somewhat controversial EP (MORE JOY, LESS SHAME) that playfully tweaked folk traditionalists with a half hour of trip-hop experiments and a live version of "Joyful Girl" sung with Doc Severinson and the Buffalo Philharmonic, THE PAST DIDN'T GO ANYWHERE continues the singer-songwriter's iconoclastic streak. Though the album is billed as a duet with leftist political balladeer Utah Phillips, the construction of the record is rather strange. Phillips doesn't sing here but extemporizes often- fascinating monologues on a variety of topics both political and personal. DiFranco took these tapes of Phillips and recorded unobtrusive instrumental backing for them, playing nearly all the instruments-tenor, acoustic, electric, and steel guitars, bass, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, percussion, thumb piano and samples--by herself, with Darcie Deaville adding touches of fiddle here and there. The resulting 12 tracks are a strange but often beautiful sort of folkie-dub.

Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (11/08/96, pp.68-69)
- "...Both his voice and the cut-and-spliced hip-hop production by folk grrrl DiFranco are stiffer than they need to be, but Phillips' didactic monologues possess a sarcastic absurdity that fans of Woody Guthrie and Beck should identify with."

- Rating: B

Musician (1/97, p.86)
- "...tapes of him (Phillips)
explaining why folk songs are boring, telling stories...philosophizing about the stupidity of greed. DiFranco unobtrusively chopped up the tapes and provided an ambient dub backing. The result grabs you both intellectually and musically..."
