Though the album is billed as a duet with leftist political balladeer Utah Phillips, the construction of the record is rather strange. Phillips doesn't sing here but extemporizes often- fascinating monologues on a variety of topics both political and personal. DiFranco took these tapes of Phillips and recorded unobtrusive instrumental backing for them, playing nearly all the instruments-tenor, acoustic, electric, and steel guitars, bass, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, percussion, thumb piano and samples--by herself, with Darcie Deaville adding touches of fiddle here and there. The resulting 12 tracks are a strange but often beautiful sort of folkie-dub. |
