| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Producers include: Lady Saw, Dave Kelly, John John, Patrick Roberts, Bulba & Fatta. | | Jamaican dancehall sensation Lady Saw achieved her breakthrough with 1997's PASSION, a mix of hip-hop, contemporary American R&B, and classic dancehall rhythms. But the stylistic mix doesn't end there. Lady Saw's vocal stylings fold in opera, down-home blues, country & western, and Dean Martin-style lounge, among other tricks. On top of the disc's crisp, danceable beats (most of PASSION was produced by the artist), Saw's authoritative flow and sassy, saucy attitude pack a serious wallop. This is especially evident on her duets with Shaggy ("Love Is Strange") and Beenie Man ("Healing"). A minor modern dancehall classic, PASSION is one of Lady Saw's most successful efforts. | Musical Guests | | Stone Love | | DJ Clue | | Merciless | | Beenie Man | | Shaggy |
| | Artist Overview | | Since its inception, Jamaica's dancehall culture has been known for its extreme displays of masculinity, male sexual bravado, and gangsta braggadocio, all of which made female DJ Lady Saw's rise to superstardom all the more significant. Debuting in the mid 1990s, Saw easily matched her male counterparts in terms of gusto and skill, and while her lyrical content was by no means mild (in fact it was "slack" enough to get her censored in Jamaica), it was from a distinctly female perspective. "The First Lady of Dancehall" opened the door for many other female dancehall singers, and even took home a Grammy in 2003 for her guest appearance on No Doubt's "Underneath it All." |
