Blu-ray means incredible full-HD images, breathtaking sound and 5x the data capacity of DVDs. Combining a PHL Reference Chroma Processor with advanced P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing) imaging technology, UniPhier® — the Precise Digital Video processor — reproduces crisp, natural colors that are extremely faithful to the original movie. It does this by up-sampling the color information in decoded video signals, while the super high-speed P4HD up-converts content recorded in 480i/p, 720p or 1080i format to 1080p by correctly generating each pixel according to information drawn from up to 60 surrounding pixels. The image motion of each pixel is then categorized into one of 16 levels, from stationary to super fast. Image quality is further enhanced by Diagonal Processing, which creates smooth, sharp diagonal lines, and 3:2 Pull-Down, which optimizes the processing accordingly for film or video making the images look natural and lifelike. In addition, the DMP-BD30's HDMI output is Deep Color compatible, with 4,096 steps of gradation for even smoother, finer-quality images that meet Hollywood's stringent demands, so you can experience movies just the way they were meant to be experienced.

I've had the BD30 for about a year, so I'll chip in. I tried a Sony before buying the BD30 but the Sony took much longer to load data. The setup was fairly easy using HDMI to a Sony XBR4 flatscreen and a JVC 5.1 surround. I'm using an optical cable for audio to the JVC. One firmware upgrade has been issued and I chose to download the upgrade, burn a CD, and let the player upload from the CD. An alternate method is to connect the unit to a wired internet connection and upgrades are automatic. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the player. Performance is good, easy operation, no glitches. I'd recommend it.

Complicated setup when using standard DVD's as no video is output from the HDMI port. Have to use composite or if you want good quality upconverting then component cables are necessary. This is not covered in the manual as it implys you can get output from HDMI for everything. I was not able to do that with the units I had. If you use only Blueray then its not a issue.

Excellent price. Relatively easy to navigate screen. Panasonic makes great DVD players & I expect this will be the same for this Blu-ray player. This is a well rated player on most websites that sell it.

I have my Panasonic DMP-BD30K - Blue-ray DVD Player connected to my Samsung HL S0F087W 1080p DLP TV by HDMI connector. I'm also using a Yamaha receiver which is connected via fiber optic cable. I have no complaints with the picture quality with the player and Blue Ray player. The DB30K has one of the fastest movie load times so you don't have to wait a long time for the movie to start playing. Some Sony models I looked at took almost two full minutes to load. As with any device you need to keep the firmware updated. To update the firmware you have to go to Panasonics website and download it. The website also gives good detail instruction in how to download and burn the firmware on a CD-R media. Put the CD-R in the player and wait 5 five to 10 minutes for the firmware to install. I gave it a 4 for ease of use for non technical people who don’t know how to burn software to a CD. So far I have not had any problems and I am very satisfied with the performance of my Panasonic DMP-30K Blue Ray player. Buy.com sold me the player at a good price with free shipping.

The price was fair with free shipping and it arrived in one day. I hooked it up to my new Panasonic Plasma in seconds with an HDMI cable and started playing a movie immediately. You won't believe the detail. The chassis is sleek and very low profile. It looks so elegant that I kept it on top of the entertainment credenza instead of inside with the rest of the components. The EZ-Sync feature is automatic and works great. This Panasonic Blu-ray was the right choice for me.

My main knock on this product is that I have to pay far more for this player than I did for my Toshiba HD DVD player with the resulting picture and sound quality being the same. I also feel that the navigation capabilities of the Toshiba are far better. But at this time, if you want to see the whole range of available Hi Def material, you need to have players from both formats. Boot time is relatively quick on this player and I do like the controller. Although it is not back lit, the buttons are large and are arranged in a logical order making it easy to use even in the dark.

Basically just an addition to the review from 'amiles@ou.edu' who already pointed out the positives (ease of use, fantastic HD picture) but 1 glaring negative (5db loss on the LFE channel with PCM). One other negative worth mentioning is this player (at least moreso than others) doesn't often work well with the current Samsung LN-Txx65/71/81 series LCD TV's. Can't prove it's the TV or the player but bottom line is there are often issues with HDCP negotiation, resulting in a flickering screen or no picture at all. I have a TV of that series and it works fine with the BD30 on 1 HDMI input but not another so just be aware.

5 of 5 Astonishing picture quality in a simple package Friday, January 25, 2008

My first foray into the HD world was really the combination of the Panasonic HDC-SD5 HD camcorder and this BD player. I wanted to be able to readily view the HD footage I was taking on the camera and this player purported to do just that. It does. I can take the SD card from the camera and slide it into the player. It perfectly acceses the data. If I burn HD content onto a DVD-R with the burner included with the camcorder, the discs are read beautifully by the BD player in 1080i. It really is seemless and exactly what I was looking for. It looks as if Blu Ray will eventually prevail, but I have no real stake in that issue. I still have only a 1080i TV. The player nicely upconverts SD DVDs - they do look a little sharper and more vibrant. Blu Ray discs look great; I'm simply astonished by the video quality. It is not the quantum leap that DVDs were from VHS, but then I haven't hooked a BD to a 1080p TV yet! Anyway, I recomend the player and also recomend the camcorder.

This product is close to being a really outstanding device. It provides excellent video performance, operates rather quickly, has a truely excellent digital picture player, is easy to set up and, the audio is outstanding in some formats but not so good in others. The BD30 does have a significant design flaw for those of you who know your digital audio. It will play bitstream audio very well as supported by the BD disc. It has a very good feature for playing "uncompressed PCM audio" from BD disc "but" it doesn't deliver the LFE channel correctly. The volume on this channel is down -5db relative to the other channels. No, this cannot be corrected by one's sub level control... it's not that easy. Basically there's no work around for those of us who have planned on utilizing the uncompressed PCM audio. We're at the mercy of Panasonic and are holding pending their ability to correct this issue. Is it a significant problem? That depends on how one plans to use the player. If you utilize PCM, virtually anyone can, and will notice a rather thin bass from the LFE channel. A figure of -5db is significant. Had I known about this initially, I would not have purchased this product. That's rather unfortunate since in all other respects it appears to be a very good product.

5 of 5 One Nice Blu Ray Player! Monday, January 14, 2008

I originally purchased the Samsung BPD 1400 Blu Ray player from a local retailer before Christmas. I got a great deal on it at under 300! I found out why in the next few weeks. It had a excellent picture but the audio from the digital outputs was low and I had to turn up my receiver a lot louder than my satellite audio. One strike. Another annoyance with the player was the long load up times of the discs. It was horrible! Strike Two! The other thing that started happening was the thing started studering and the audio track was not in sync with the video. So you would see the actors lips moving and a few seconds later you would get the dialog. Strike Three! I promptly returned it for a refund and began searching for an alternative. That is when I came across this player. It had decent reviews. I had previously owned a Panasonic DVD player and I really like it so I decided to give it a shot. It was more expensive that some of the other players but well worth the extra money. I have had none of the same problems with it as I had with the Samsung. The load up times of the disc are very fast in comparison to the Samsung. It is a little slower than some regular dvd players but not bad, especially in comparison to the other blu player I had. It is a great product and I would highly recommend it over any other Blu Ray player on the market. Word of advice, Stay away from Samsung dvd players! The TVs are ok, as I have one but the dvd players... don't go there.
