How Do We Compare?

Other phone companies nickel and dime you for local toll calls and long-distance, layering on mysterious fees, taxes, and surcharges for stuff you don't need. They bill you extra each month for caller-ID, call-waiting, and voicemail; features we, at ooma, believe are fundamental to your U.S. calling rights.

Your one-time purchase of an award-winning ooma system gives you free home phone service. You'll get the voice quality and ease of a traditional landline. That's because we've architected the ooma system to partner with your existing home phones and high-speed Internet to deliver state-of-the-art calling without monthly bills.

There are no special handsets. No tricky calling codes to enter. No need to log onto a computer. Just pick up a phone and dial. It's that easy.

And for those who demand more, you'll get a 60-day free trial of ooma Premier, so you can test-drive all of ooma's innovative features, like multi-ring, personal numbers and private voicemail for each member of your home, with lots more on the way.

So if monthly bills are weighing you down, the answer is simple. Break free with ooma.

5 of 5 Good choice !!! Wednesday, May 27, 2009
RF from Houston,TX

This is great VoIP phone without monthly charge. Setup was easy, just took few minutes. I did not have any problem with my wireless router firewall. Other VoIP I had caused lot of headache to have my wireless router back to work. Almost a month with Ooma and I am happy with service. I will able to carry with me out of US, great portability. I tought to transfer my current landline phone number, but I left this decision later on.

5 of 5 Great for the Price Saturday, May 23, 2009
Robert from Tarpon Springs, FL
This is actually my second unit that I've bought for my second house, My first unit works great, Had it for over 3 months now, The only neagative thing I can say about the system is I get a echo effect in the background when speaking to some people, not all the time, But for the monthly price of $0.00, I am completly satisfied with it. My second unit I connected to my router and setup with my first unit still connected and they both worked off the one router together.

5 of 5 Was Doubtful, Not Anymore Monday, May 18, 2009
Aaron from Cedarburg, WI
I tried my cable company's VOIP solution a couple of years ago and after 2 months of terrible phone calls cancelled and sent back the equipment. I still use the same cable internet service and was skeptical when I purchased the OOMA. I have had it connected for about 2 weeks and have had GREAT phone quality at all times of the day. The call quality is crystal clear and I am still amazed at the difference between OOMA and my cable company's VOIP offering. I don't know what they do different but it works! As for setup, it was a breeze and took me all of 20 minutes including unboxing, registering with OOMA, and connecting it to my network and a stand-alone phone. I will keep this and port my phone number from AT&T to OOMA for my phone service and then tie it into my house phone jacks.

5 of 5 I really like Ooma Monday, April 27, 2009
Nikki from The Republic of Texas
I started using Ooma last year and have been totally satisfied. In fact, I just completed the deal by porting my old number over (which took way too long) and finally hooking up my Scout. I had been with Vonage for 6 years. I'm very happy with Ooma and love the unique features it offers.

5 of 5 Ooma Rocks! Saturday, April 18, 2009
A Customer from Madison, Alabama
I've had my Ooma system for a few months now and let me tell you, it rocks! I love it. I usually don't leave comments about products but Ooma really is a great product! I have my cordless phone systems, satellite receivers, and faxes connected and I've not had any issues with them. I don't have a security system so I'm not sure how it would work with it. Just be sure to prefix satellite and fax numbers with *99. I have a multi-media wiring closet and I wired the phone output from my Ooma hub to all of the other phone outlets in my home to make them Ooma outlets. Paying Ooma $95 a year for their premium services is well worth it. Try Ooma! You won't be disappointed.

5 of 5 Another satisfied customer Tuesday, March 24, 2009
A Customer from Long Beach, NY
Easy to install, works right away. You got to pick your phone number from a group of numbers (for me, I have option to pick from like 30 numbers). Works if installed between modem and router and works just connect to the router cable. Great products. Rarely the other party did complaint about voice echo. I have 760KB dsl.

A Customer from Elmhurst, IL
I've been using Ooma for a few months now. I would highly highly recommend it. It's very easy to set up. The voice quality is excellent and no phone bills! I bought one for my parents who were using Comcast and paying over $50 a month. They are really happy with it too.

5 of 5 it works as good as my land line Monday, February 16, 2009
kerry w from phoenix, AZ
Honestly, I was very skeptical to purchase the Ooma. Considering they were getting all the money "up front" (no monthly charges), how good was the sound quality? Well did buy, and the sound quality is perfect. It is truly as good as my land line. I have Cox cable and a very high data transfer rate, so i am sure this helps. I didnt want it slowing my internet connection so I just hooked it to another port on my router, not before the router as they suggested, and it still works great. I would strongly recommend.

5 of 5 Great quality, super simple to install and use Saturday, February 07, 2009
Marty Brown from Walnut Creek CA
I'e been using ooma for a bit over a year now and the experience has been fantastic. After having been a Sunrocket victim, I was very leary of any VOIP system and Vonage's cheesy quality and $40 contract termination fee - regardless of how long one stays with them - really turned me off. I plugged my ooma into my cable router and I was making calls in about five minutes. The only times when have any quality issues is when my home network is extremely busy - transferring files from the internet or from one pc to another. I had a couple of technical issues early in my first couple of months with ooma and their tech support folks are incredibly responsive and helpful. Ooma's quality is apparent from the moment you receive your hub...it is packaged carefully in a presentation-style box and the hub itself looks like it was createded in a European design studio. It has the appearance of a solidly constructed answering machine with minimalist intentions. If you are looking for inexpensive calls with high quality and an end to monthly bills, you've found it. Ooma is it.

5 of 5 Awesome Voice Quality Wednesday, February 04, 2009
Andrei from Chicago, Il
I've had Ooma for over 4 months now and it is awesome! I had AT&T CallVantage VOIP for the 2 preceding years and the voice quality is hands down better with Ooma. AT&T now rebranded their CallVantage solution into the U-Verse umbrella and raised the prices. Thank god for ooma. By the way I also played with Skype but that's a novelty compared to ooma. I don't use the Scout but I would consider the Premier plan if my kids were teenagers so each could have their own line and number for $99 ayear. Setup was super easy. You register the unit online using just the Mac Address on the Ooma box. You also pick a phone number in that registration process which takes about 3 min. After that you simply plug Ooma into your home router, then plug your phone into Ooma and you're done. You get a dial tone and you're free to call away. All in all it's a 10 min setup. I hear of cases where people send ooma abroad to other countries so you can have someone in Romania with a US phone number. How cool is that? I think some countries may block the ports that Ooma communicates on so do your homework if you are interested in that. I work from home 3 days a week and am on the phone at least 4 hours with international calls. The voice quality and stability was critical for me but I am super satisfied. You have to have a good internet connection obviously first of all but if that's stable then you can count on Ooma.

5 of 5 This is a champ Monday, February 02, 2009
The Sith from Somerset, NJ
I've subscribed to a lot of VoIP services over the last 5 years, and this by far is the best of the lot. Aside from saving me $25+ bucks a month, the device looks and performs great. Of course, you gotta have a nice internet hookup in order for the device to work as it should. Setting it up was a breeze, it took me longer to take everything out of the box and hook it up on my network than to actually configure the device. I connected my wireless phone system to the core and the whole house was buzzing. I didn't even have to use the scout, maybe in the future. The basic service suits me fine, but may consider the premier service for business purposes. Invest on this one, you won't regret it.

5 of 5 Easy to Set Up & Works Great Sunday, January 18, 2009
A Customer from Spartanburg, SC
I've had the ooma for about two weeks. The initial set up is very simple and the phone has worked great ever since. I've used the phone for both making and reciving calls and I've not notice any problems at all. It's a great deal if they don't go out of business. I had Charter (cable) telephone prior to ooma and there is not much difference.

5 of 5 OOma experience Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Jim from Houston Texas
I am a Long time user with VOIP devices. I have used many VOIP services in the past and keep on switching to find better deals. So far I am pretty satisfied altogeather with Ooma. I have been using it for the last 2 weeks. Voice is verly clear, better than some of the paid ones. Customer service is good but sometimes takes a few days for the email reply. Only problem had was calling overseas. Voice quality was bad. I tried a few times and then also the quality of the voice was so so. Making the calls in the USA are GREAT. Also the jingle is mandatory when ever you pickup the phone and when the other caller answers. But for life time free service I dont mind that. I just hope the service quality remains the same over time and the company stays in business.

5 of 5 ooma saves you money! Tuesday, January 06, 2009
21boltstreet from San Diego, CA
I have been a VOIP customer through Lingo for about a year. I have been more than satisfied with the service with Lingo, but saw ooma as a way to save even more money. Frankly, I had phone service through my cable company for many, many years, and the only reason I switched to VOIP was because I wanted to add Caller ID, but couldn't stand the thought of paying $8/month. Like Lingo, it didn't take me very long to get ooma up and running, and I have done what many others have done by plugging the telephone cord from one of my wall outlets directly to the phone input on the ooma hub. This allows any phone in my home which is plugged into my home wiring to be active, just like with a traditional phone service. Just remember to unplug the phone line at the junction box which comes into your home. Since I am not interested in having another phone line, this configuration allows me not to use the ooma Scout, which I will probably sell. If what you seek is basic phone service with Caller ID and voice mail, it's hard to go wrong with ooma. Frankly, depending on your current phone bill (probably between $25-60/month), ooma doesn't have to last very long before you re-coup your investment. Give it a shot! By the way, on the two times I called customer service, I had to wait about 10 minutes to get through to someone. While I certainly would have preferred a shorter wait, it didn't seem completely unreasonable as others have suggested. The first time I called, it was to shut off the "viral dialtone" which appears when someone answers your call. I found it very annoying and distracting, so I was very happy that I could have it removed.

5 of 5 Why use anything else? Tuesday, January 06, 2009
A Believer from Naperville, IL
Ooma is great. In today's shaky economy, I don't understand why people continue to throw money away on old-fashioned phone lines. How do you better than free? You don't. It's easy to install, setup, and use. I've yet to find a drawback. I'm going to make it my mission to convert as many people as possible from the dark-ages of the phone companies, to the future, which is Ooma.

5 of 5 Great Product. Friday, January 02, 2009
A Customer from Warwick, Rhode Island
All I can say about it is that it was easy to set up, it allows me to have a land line, it gives me an infinite amount of minutes to use whenever I want to make a phone call, I upgraded to the premium service and now have two lines, was able to transfer my number for free, and I haven't had any difficulty speaking with any of their call service members. Good Product and it saves me 22 dollars from having to keep vonage. It also allows me to forward my calls to my cell phone.

5 of 5 Amazing! Saves us $60/month! Wednesday, December 31, 2008
A Customer from Carson City, NV
An awesome - well designed product from the minute you open the box. We have no complaints. We have DSL and haven't had an issue. I have to keep pinching myself that I am not paying $60 a month for a phone bill anymore! The box paid for itself in only 4 months! I have gotten all my family members on board with this and we are all loving the concept of not paying a phone bill. Hopefully it stays that way!

5 of 5 excellent stuff Tuesday, December 30, 2008
De-landline from Baltimore, MD
I spent 20 minutes to install it on my Comcast cable model. Easy! The sound quality is damn good and I don't have to pay phone bill any more. Let me tell you, you can also save money for repairing fee from the landline company. A verizon guy charged me 90 bucks for changing two tiny cables in the wall.

5 of 5 Goodbye, Vonage Saturday, December 27, 2008
GeekGirl from Silver Springs, fl
Let me say I have used sunrocket, Vonage, and skype for the last 5 years,I have a cable (budget) connection, and I don't have a landline at all. I happen to run across this on Amazon while buying other items, I read the reviews, and I am sick of vonage(they just increased the 500 minute plan) So I bought the system and took 5 minutes to replace my Vonage box. My box came with a 50.00 international credit, which I will never use. The sound quality blows me away, I am even using a cordless phone, it is really that good,The choice i made was for a new number, I really got a great easy number, I love Ooma,I will not use the scout, I have a tiny place put it on ebay and was snapped up in minutes, This is the best phone quality MUch better the Skype, and Vonage. I say buy it in a very few months it will pay for itself, In this economy anyone can go under in a flash, I hope its around for a very long time as Its the best!

4 of 5 Good Deal Saturday, December 27, 2008
Fuller from Minneapolis, MN
The installation set up was easy, the sound quality is good and the overall performance was just as good if not better than the land line. You only need a Scout if you need/want a second line, otherwise you can use cordless headsets throughout your house. But the best part is NO MORE PHONE BILL!

5 of 5 Perfect Voip solution with no monthly fee Monday, December 22, 2008
Mike from Canton, MI
This VOIP system has replaced my land line saving me $40.00/month. The quality is almost as good as the land line. It has many more features than my land line. I don't need as many scout for many of my phone. By combining the wall and phone plugs on the ooma router on the same 4-wire phone line, I can plug as many phone throughout the house without extra scouts. I use the wall plug on the ooma router on the 2nd line (the 1st line is for all the phones and fax), then on the scout, using a rj11 splitter to use the second line.

5 of 5 Everything I was looking for Monday, December 22, 2008
Srinivas from New Britain, CT
First and fore most the amount of thought Ooma put into the design of their product is just amazing. It looks sleek, does what its supposed to do with flying colors. The whole hook up didnt even take 15 minutes. The calls are crisp and no one I talked to could tell the difference between this and my old landline quality. The next test I put Ooma through was carrying a conversation while streaming video and downloading a file at the same time. Again I should say Ooma surprised me. No issues with quality what so ever. I havent tried out the Ooma scout though. I dont have a need for it right now. I use AT&T DSL 3.0 Mbps connection.

5 of 5 Super Cool Thursday, December 18, 2008
Mark from Warner Robins GA
Ooma is the bomb. I have my ooma hooked up to a 4 handset cordless phone system. This is great because I dont have to keep my cell phone on me when I am in the house. The ooma will also travel well when I move with the military.

5 of 5 Good telephone! Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Marco G. from Chicago, IL
Unlike what it says, it is not so easy to set it up. At a certain point almost the ooma tab was blinking red, and the other keypads where steady red. It is not a case that you find in the troubleshooting guide so I started to think "I will return this item". But I started to redo everything again and the ooma tab was blue! I heard the ooma calling sound and now I enjoy making all free calls in the US! Once you configure this item correctly, it's really cool to use!!!

4 of 5 Great value and performance, installation procedur Monday, December 15, 2008
Andy from Olathe, KS
Ooma does what it claims, and it does it well. You get clear, reliable phone calls absolutely free of charge. However, getting the system set-up is a bit of a challenge. When I attempted to activate my new system, the registration server was down, causing me to spend hours attempting to troubleshoot something that was a problem on Ooma's end. Similarly, setting up port forwarding to allow for gaming, etc. with Ooma is a challenge. Be prepared to spend hours surfing the Ooma forums for help if you need to set this up. However, once everything is up and running, Ooma is great. I have had no problems once the initial installation hurdles were cleared.

5 of 5 Great system Monday, December 15, 2008
BertF from Oceanside, CA
Although the setup can be a little confusing, if you follow it in detail you should be up in no time at all. Take a look at your network to see if you may have any unusual circumstances as I have a CAT6 network in my house when it was built so the setup becomes a little more work to get everything up and running.

4 of 5 Great Buy Thursday, December 11, 2008
KW from Katy, Texas
I bought the ooma because i thought it would be a great way to save money and not go over my cell minutes. I know it works with DSL and Cable. I'm not sure about Uverse or satellite internet. Installation was easy. However, it took about 10 minutes for my mine to work (My friend's only took a minute). The plus side of the Ooma, other than the cost, versus the magic jack is that you don't have to connect it to your PC or laptop. Im running mine w/ Comcast and so far so good. The voice quality is not superior (compared to my old landline), but good. I have a dect phone and there are a few times when I hear static for a few seconds when I pick up then it goes away. I've noticed that the hub loses signal for a few seconds. It usually turns red if it loses signal then blue when its ok to use, but this rarely happens. I also had some issues when the other person on the other end doesn't hear me as clear but I hear them loud and clear on my end. You might have some issues with cable during high-peak times. Ooma offers other services that you have to pay for such as 3 way, international calling, and a second line. If you are worried about the blue light on the hub bothering you when you go to sleep, there's a knob you can use to turn the light down. I'm not sure about the build of this product. It has a one year warranty. I haven't heard of many defects, but I hope its solid enough to last at least 2 years. I guess a big drawback (and the gamble of buying this product) is the company's ability to sustain itself in the long run.

5 of 5 Can't be beat Tuesday, December 09, 2008
A Customer from Staten Island, NY
I gave up landline use for my cell but found that I had some dead zones in my house where I couldn't get reception, so ooma was perfect for me. Setup and online registration was simple and I was given a choice of 20 local numbers to choose from. Sound is excellent, even clearer than the local phone company. I didn't have a need for the included Scout as I'm using a 4 phone cordless system. The ooma hub is stylish and compact. I love the ooma lounge which serves as an online answering machine. Very cool to be able to get your home phone messages online when I'm away from home. I can't say enough great things about ooma. I was a bit skeptical and put off buying one for months... I only wish I would have purchased it sooner! Best part is supporting a private company and sticking it to the local monopolized phone company! Oh and never having a phone bill again is a major plus!

5 of 5 Ooma is A+ Sunday, December 07, 2008
CM from New Paltz, NY
Free phone service cannot be beat. The call quality is better than Vonage and it uses less bandwidth at the same time. The device is stylish and fits right in as it looks like an answering machine. Everything is great and I'm saving $350.00 a year because I moved from Vonage. I highly recommend this device to everyone that likes to save money. one recommendation: KEEP your landline and reduce it to local calls only so you can still dial 911 like before switching to VOIP. At $195 it is $55 below MSRP so buy it before the price increases again!

4 of 5 Ooma Hub and Scout combo Thursday, November 27, 2008
Danny from Baldwin , Maine
I have had ooma since it was released to public about two years ago . I must say for the most part it has been a great system . After 6 months , one of my scouts needed to be replaced as the ooma tab would stay lit orange instead of blue and would not work . Customer service was exceptional and sent out a replacement scout immediately. I have verizon basic dsl 768kbs x 128kbs and at times my family and friends would say that my voice would break up or sound computerized . It also seems to be worse when I am online because there is not enough bandwith . But , two years later we still like it so it cant be that bad . Also two great features we enjoy is the virtual second phone line , also makes three way calling very easy . And secondly it allows you two push the envelope button on the hub or scout and immediately forward all your calls to voicemail . This really comes in handy at night when you are trying to get that much needed sleep. At the end of the day I would say that this is a very good system . We paid over 400.00 dollars two years ago so this is an incredible deal . Enjoy

5 of 5 Excellent Buy Wednesday, November 26, 2008
B. Moore from Rochester Hills, MI
I am very pleased with the system. It was very easy to set-up and works just as described. Our voice quality is just as good as the cable/modem system we used with our cable provider, only it's free. It will only take me 5 months to completely pay for the system and then the savings really start.

5 of 5 Easily Worth the Switch Saturday, November 22, 2008
David from Mountain Top, PA
I was first told about this from my brother who lives in the NYC area from ads he heard. I went to the ooma.com website and saw the demo. I read every review I could and was still neverous about making a switch. I am a Minister and I have two lines in my house with one being just to receive calls as a church line. My montly bill for two lines plus DSL was $106 a month, plus I have a cell phone. I was sick of paying so much for what seemed liked redundancy. I ordered the ooma from buy.com and it was at my house the next day. I did not choose special shipping. It was very easy to install. Ooma gives you the premium service for 60 days. It works with your existing phones and I have cordless phones in my three level house. I have Verizon $29.99 DSL speed. The phones are clearer than my landline used to be because I always had some sort of static on the line. The features are great! I dropped my second line the second day I installed the ooma. I am in the process of dropping the first line. Minus the $29.99 for DSL I will be saving $76 a month. After three months this will pay for itself. I've had it one month. It is easily worth the switch! I hope the company stays in business. I was so sick of paying so much to have the kind of service I needed. This gives me everything I had but, without a phone bill! I called the people at ooma once with a question and they were quick to answer and courteous in response. I got a great deal at buy.com and the shipping was excellent. I see other people are coming out with similar kinds of products so you will have to do your own research. I am very happy with the Ooma. It looks and operates like an answering machine. It seems very solid. I bought an extra Scout for my third floor and they work the same as the Hub. You get one extra Scout with the initial purchase. Goodbye phone bills, it is easily worth the switch!

5 of 5 I love it Monday, November 03, 2008
maniusha from bloomington, IN
The installation of ooma is very simple. It took 5 minutes for online activation and 15 minutes to install the Hub and the scout. I assigned a new number (ooma provided) to the scout to check the voice quality and other function. It works great and voice quality is very good. I am trying to port my home phone to ooma. I am using this only for the past 4 days. I will come back and update in a week or two.

5 of 5 Love my ooma Sunday, November 02, 2008
CF from Half Moon Bay, CA
I have been using my ooma for about a month now and absolutely love it. Installation was so easy, it only took about 20 min. I run a business out of my house and have been using ooma for both my home line and business line. I also have a vacation house in another state and just installed one there. Between the three phone lines with long distance that I've had, I am saving $400 per month. Once I have my number ported to ooma, I will save an additional $90 for a total of $490 per month. The quality of the phone line is excellent. I can't say enough good things about ooma. It's incredibly easy to use and the money I'm saving is just unbelievable.

5 of 5 Quality phone service for free! Monday, October 13, 2008
Scoop from New Jersey
I first heard of ooma from a radio ad (WFAN in NY). As a Verizon customer I was paying a minimum of $25/month (sometimes $50+ with toll calls) and that did not include long distance, caller ID, call waiting, etc... these features are all included free with ooma! I have DSL service that provides 3000kbps/768kbps (download/upload speed - that is kiloBITS, NOT kiloBYTES as another reviewer here suggested) and call quality has been excellent. Once you are up and running, go to www.speedtest.net to test your internet speed. You can set up ooma to optimize voice traffic based on your connection speed. Go to www.ooma.com/support and search for 'quality of service'. Awesome product! Thanks ooma!

5 of 5 Wow, It Really Works! Monday, October 06, 2008
A Customer from Buffalo NY
I am so glad I discovered Ooma! Easy setup. No monthly frees for basic service (unlimited US calling, call waiting, call id, and voicemail). This is all I need anyway. Saves so much over Verizon and Vonage!!! Sounds good for the price. Make sure you have a very good high speed internet rate! This is a must. If you have dsl basic or cable modem basic service...forget about ooma, you won't have enough bandwith. Need at least 300KB (kilobytes, not kilobits) upload and 400KB download speed!!!

5 of 5 Love it! Thursday, September 25, 2008
Yvonne from Boyers PA
We've had OOMA for about 3 weeks now. We did have a power outage because of a wind storm during which of course we had no phone, but other than that I have loved this little box. I know there are other services you can get through the internet but this is like a regular phone. We had problems with our cell phone service because we're out in the boonies, but now we don't have to go outside to make call! We don't use the international calling, but we do use the US long distance constantly so it's perfect for us! Love it love it love it!
