At 12 tracks, it's a little brief, and it's also a curious selection of music, too. This leans heavily on hip-hop and R&B -- all but two of the cuts could be categorized this way -- which makes Panic! at the Disco's "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" and James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" stick out like sore thumbs. The rest is a combination of songs that were big on the radio in 2006, some of them -- like Cassie's "Me & U" (here in a remix), Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" -- bigger than others, which is why this isn't quite in the first rank of contemporary hits collections: there aren't enough blockbusters here, not enough to make it worthwhile for the average listener. That said, if you happen to like to most of the singles here -- including Yung Joc's "It's Goin' Down," Danity Kane's "Show Stopper," T.I.'s "What You Know," Lupe Fiasco's "Kick Push," Sean Paul and Keyshia Cole's "(When You Gonna) Give It Up to Me" and D4L's "Laffy Taffy" -- this sure is an easy way to get them all in one convenient package. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |
