 Editor's Note
THE ONE is based on the futuristic premise that there is more than one universe: there are many parallel universes, each of which contain a slightly different version of every person who has ever lived. Yulaw (Jet Li) is a rogue agent from the Multiverse Bureau of Intelligence who has learned that, by traveling from one parallel universe to another and killing the alternate versions of himself, he gains his counterparts's strength, speed and intelligence. After killing one hundred and twenty-three parallel versions of himself, Yulaw has gained almost unstoppable power--and there is only one version of himself left, Gabriel Law (Jet Li), a Los Angeles cop. Yulaw travels to the universe that houses his nemesis, followed by a pair of agents intent on stopping him from killing Gabe and either gaining near-Godlike powers, or destroying the fabric of all existence. Gabe is confused to find himself being hunted and shot at by himself, but with the help of his wife, T.K. (Carla Gugino), and the Multiverse cops (Delroy Lindo and Jason Statham), Gabe engages Yulaw in a series of spectacular fights to become the One. Glen Morgan and James Wong, creators of FINAL DESTINATION and several memorable episodes of THE X-FILES, direct this mind-bending martial-arts extravaganza.

 | The One (2001) - DVD Review By: Annette Cardwell - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 3/20/2009 5:39 PM | |
Jet Li has joined the dubious ranks of those martial arts stars playing opposite themselves in a film -- including Jackie Chan and Jean Claude Van Damme. But instead of playing a long-lost twin brother to himself as in the other films, Li’s actually himself squared -- another version of Jet from a different parallel “universe.” That’s right: Only Jet Li can kick Jet Li’s ass. James Wong and Glen Morgan, the guys who brought us the cheesy but mildly entertaining Final Destination (as well as the wonderfully gruesome X-Files episode “Home”), flex their sci-fi/kung fu action muscles with The One. With Jet Li on board, the action side is in great shape. Unfortunately, they come up pretty emaciated on the sci-fi front....read the full review |

This movie is Widescreen, I have a 16:9 HDTV and I see the whole frame, if you watch it on any other type of tv and see the black bars on the top and bottom, that means your just watching it on a smaller screen. I will see the bars on the screen even with my widescreen tv, but no cropping from side to side, which is called pan and scan, when shown in full screen. Believe me I know what I am talking about, I am a home theatre freak.
Oh yeah, this movie was AWESOME, Jet Li is crazy with all the moves he does, I think he could kick Jackie Chan's rear end, anyday of the week. PS: turn down your subwoofer for this movie if your watching it at 2am , or your neighbors may not like you anymore. I loved this movie !!! Was this review helpful?

I really liked this movie and really wanted the DVD. However, I was very upset to find out that the widescreen featured on this DVD is merely the already cropped fullscreen version further cropped on the top and bottom to simulate widescreen. That means you not only don't see the left and right sides of the original image, you don't see some of the top and bottom when you watch the widescreen mode. Might as well watch the fullscreen version on the DVD. Something needs to be done about the practice of false advertising that the DVD includes both widescreen and fullscreen, because you do not get the true widescreen version of the movie. 3 of 3 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 This movie just rocked!! Tuesday, March 05, 2002 A Viewer from Dorchester, WI
The stunts in this movie were just awesome, just like the Matrix. The movie is an hour and twenty minutes long, but the action never stops, and I mean that. It never stops. The ending sequence is so cool. Jet Li plays duel roles in this movie and they have to fight each other at the end. The music rocks too. It just rocks. Was this review helpful?
