The Nightwatchman is Tom Morello.

Musician and political and social activist Tom Morello's stark new album as The Nightwatchman, One Man Revolution, is a dark, urgent portrait of a world in turmoil, 13 songs of "bitterness and revenge." Morello, the Grammy Award-winning guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, compares war zones in the US and Iraq, proclaims that Jesus was black and pinpoints the sociopolitical struggles of the American leftist underground in the series of self-penned originals, singing and playing acoustic guitar for the first time on record.

The Nightwatchman is the solo project of Tom Morello, the guitarist best known for his slashing attack in contemporary rock heavyweights Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Morello's solo debut is a far cry from the metallic thunder of his previous output; instead, ONE MAN REVOLUTION is an album of simple, acoustic folk songs that center on social and political issues. Though there's little chance that he'll ever be dubbed "the new Bob Dylan," Morello fares surprisingly well as a message-oriented troubadour, and his indignant, outspoken voice is a welcome one in troubled times.

Throughout the album, Morello flows back and forth between folk and rock with splashes of country, reggae and Celtic music, most notably on "The Road I Must Travel." His lonesome guitar and vocals are often subtly accompanied by minimalist piano and percussion parts, much like Johnny Cash's last album American IV. ...read the full review

Alternative Press (p.156)
- 3 stars out of 5 -- "This is straight-up unplugged protest folk the way Bob Dylan used to do it....The more inspired moments are truly undeniable."
