| Author Bio| St. Augustine was born to a pagan father and a Christian mother, who played an influential role in her son's intellectual and religious development. Augustine did not convert to Christianity until age 33, before that studying law, literature, and politics, and engaging in a life of sexual promiscuity. From North Africa, he traveled to Italy, where he met Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, a rhetorician who exposed Augustine to the teachings of Plato and Plotinus, and Christianity. Augustine was drawn to the religion and eventually succumbed to the power of the Christian God. He converted, and began writing. His thought and teachings on the Bible and his works of philosophy and theology set the basis for characteristics of later Western Christian culture, and greatly inspired humanists of the Renaissance, leaders of the Reformation, and modern religious figures and thinkers. St. Augustine returned to Hippo Regius (present-day Algeria) in 388, became the bishop there, and led the life of a monk. |
