Work sucks.

Features: DVD, Widescreen, Aspect Ratio 1.85:1, Dolby Digital (5.1), Dolby Surround Sound, Theatrical Trailer, Spanish, English Subtitles

Overwhelmed by stress on the job, Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) goes in for therapy and comes out with a life-changing career philosophy: work sucks. Eager to begin a new life of unemployment, he decides to spend more time with his sexy girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston) and less time at the office. When he does show up, it's only to play computer games, destroy company property and tell his boss exactly where to stick those meaningless memos. But rather than get fired, Peter's 'straight-shooting' attitude lands him a promotion! Now the stage is set to carry out a high-tech embezzling scheme that's sure to mean the end of his job...and a one-way ticket to easy street. Can he pull it off before all corporate hell breaks loose?

"Comedic fantasy."  WBAI Radio
"Sharp & funny."  Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Time

Editor's Note

This geeky 1999 office comedy starring Ron Livingston as a corporate Everyman instantly gained cult status for its unabashed caricatures of office personalities, and its theme of corporate sabotage. Peter Gibbons (Livingston) is a typical middle manager living a mundane life amid a gray maze of cubicles. Everything in his life reeks of mediocrity, from the mid-size car he drives to the chain restaurant, Chotchky's (read: TGI Friday's), where he eats lunch every day. Even his apartment, a cookie-cutter duplex with walls so thin that he can chat with his next-door neighborhood through the plaster, is totally lacking in personality. The company where he works is peppered with ambitionless drones who blindly comply with the condescending requests made of them by their Porsche-driving CEO (Gary Cole). Then one day, Gibbons snaps. As a team of experts is brought in to enact large-scale layoffs, Gibbons simply stops trying and adopts an attitude of total disinterest. That is, he's only interested in dating the blond waitress (Jennifer Anniston) at the local restaurant, and putting in place a devilish scheme for some corporate payback.

OFFICE SPACE's writer-director Mike Judge (BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD), scares up some A-list laughs with this film, while also making an excellent parody of corporate culture. Released just as the dot-com boom began to go bust, with massive trends in corporate downsizing on the horizon, it could not have been better timed. Thus, while viewers will delight in the absurdity of the ultimate office loser Milton (Stephen Root), they will also identify with some frighteningly realistic aspects of the film.

Study hard at college, land a decent-paying job as a computer programmer and enjoy the benefits of white-collar work and the accompanying creature comforts. When you're sick of cubicle hell, throw it all away for the slumming pleasures of manual labor and hope the new boss isn't the same as the old boss. That's the rather nonsensical moral to the story of Office Space, the dunderheaded if often riotously funny live-action debut from Texan animator Mike Judge, creator of television's Beavis and Butt-head and King of the Hill... Judge, as evidenced by King of the Hill, has become an astute observer of middle-American angst. Office Space offers more proof with its clever rendering of daily life at Initech, a computer company that might be located in the Silicon Valley or, really, anywhere in the country where generic office parks, chain restaurants and apartment complexes are to be found... Judge, making passing references to the far crankier Michael Douglas vehicle Falling Down and the less inspired comedy Take This Job and Shove It, has come up with an original take on the banalities and frustrations endemic to the working world. The familiarity of the setting adds an appealing edginess to the comedy. Then again, do we really want to be reminded of all that annoying stuff on our own time? - Philip Booth

5 of 5 VERY FUNNY Thursday, November 06, 2003
A Viewer from Baltimore, MD

The only negative review here is the first one about a lot of swearing. Sound more like the reviewer doesn't like rap. I really don't think it was a lot o bad language, just VERY FUNNY. I though the movie would be lame, and didn't care for it as much the first time I saw. Since, I have seen the movie about another 5 times and still laughed. I will agree with the first review though, and would not let a 13 yr old watch it. Which is probably why it is Rated R: Not for sale to persons under age 18. You need to know what you are getting, before you get it.

5 of 5 Jay Diamond from Mary Esther FL: READ THIS Wednesday, April 02, 2003
umyeah from Miami, FL
Jay, Here is a heads up about this movie. You do not like it because the cursing means it is not meant for a 13 year old movie goer? The movie is RATED R, so no one under 17 is permitted without guardian. Last time I checked, a 13 year old is younger than a 17 year old... Now remember, I need that report on my desk first thing Monday morning, and do not forget the cover sheet! The movie rocks. Anyone who works in a "cube-farm" will love it. "It is not that I am lazy, it is just that I do not care"

5 of 5 This is a great movie!!! Monday, April 22, 2002
Todd Taylor from Irmo, SC
This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I would recommend this to all adults. Please don't listen to other people that say this movie has too much cursing. It is rated R so it is going to have cursing in it, and it is a fantastic movie!!!

5 of 5 Larger than life... Saturday, November 10, 2001
Brenda from CT
When I originally heard about the concept for this movie, I thought it would bomb. When I saw it, I laughed out loud and knew it would become somewhat of a cult classic for those confined to cubicles for most of their waking hours. I think we all know how it is to hate going to work, and to just want to sleep through the answering machine messages from your boss...not to mention the cryptic messages that appear on various electronic devices (what paper jam...there is no paper jam)! We all have a fax, computer, copier, etc. that we would like to give the Samir kick! Hooray for Mike Judge - what an accurate (if not exaggerated) portrayal of life in the business world. By the way...I think you have my stapler...

5 of 5 Office Space Tuesday, November 06, 2001
Steve Padilla from Tucson, Arizona
Ususally in Hollywood a movie is made about the real world and it makes it into a fantasy world that is nothing like what it is supposed to portray. Sometimes a movie is made to be a fantasy world from the beginning, after all why watch a movie that is real anyway when you can just go outside to see real life? Office Space is the type of movie that makes fun of real life to build up as a fantasy yet becomes more real than any cubicle slave's worse nightmare. Anyone who has ever surfed the web or become near professional players of solitaire courtesy of Corporate America understands the fustrations that Peter and his friends deal with on a daily basis. Even if someone isn't a software engineer they root for the main characters in their quest to live out the ultimate dream of doing nothing by bringing their "faceless" and "evil" corporation to it's knees as they hide from what is always threatening engineer's, layoffs. Jennifer Anniston is great in her role as Peter's (Ron Livingston) new girlfriend. She could easily have been typecast as the bombshell won at the end by the hero of the movie but instead is believable as a waitress fustrated with her own job and the parallels to Corporate America. Office Space is a five star movie and I recommend it to anyone and everyone alike.

5 of 5 Fax machines BEWARE!! Wednesday, February 16, 2000
Pjd from Brooklyn, New York
Need I say more? When the guys 'fix' the fax machine has to be one of the best (funniest) angst scenes I've ever seen. We can all relate to this movie, regardless of whether or not we've worked in a field of cubicles. This is a must see. In my book it's a must OWN.

5 of 5 If there is justice Tuesday, February 08, 2000
coreym from Boxford, MA
If there is any justice in the universe, this movie should win best oscar for writing. You could even throw in a music and a couple of acting awards with that. The only problem I had was that it seemed to move a little slow. But it's easy to overlook that. It's one of those movies where every line is quotable. A modern classic.

5 of 5 THIS MOVIE IS HILARIOUS!!! Tuesday, December 21, 1999
Trevor (Age 20) from Phoenix
This is one of the funniest movies that I have seen for a long time! I was a bit weary about renting it for the first time, but after the third rental, I decided that I had to get it. Everyone with whom I have rented it has absolutely loved it. It is one of those movies that when brought up in a group of people, everyone starts reciting lines or recalling their favorite parts. This is an absolute must have for anyone's collection!!

Coming from an IS/Corporate environment, I found this movie to be absolutely hilarious. The “Lumberg” character was just great. I love the rapping in the car bit too – that was just classic! I let all of my co-workers pass this movie around over about a week and everyone just loved it!

John from Iowa
This is the best movie that I have seen in years. It starts out funny, and it just gets better and better. You'll be rewinding the tape over and over, because this movie is THE BEST! It shows how office life really is. It's definitely an overall 20 out of 10.

5 of 5 Motorola's Office Automation Monday, October 04, 1999
Ted Williams from Lindenhurst, IL
This movie is absolutely gut ripping. I was on the floor most of the time and had a crying attack because I was laughing so hard. I have worked in some sort of IT role for more than ten years now, and this movie is too familiar. The geek at work that listens to hardcore rap is a total grandslam in my book. The rap soundtrack was perfect. any other music would have been like a cliche.

5 of 5 Best movie ever. Thursday, September 23, 1999
A Viewer from Seattle, WA
I can't abide rap music, but the movie's rap soundtrack actually makes the movie better because of the hilarious way that the music is played against the suit and tie wearing characters. This is one of those movies that makes you laugh 8 days after seeing it.

1 of 5 Good Movie, Bad Rap Saturday, September 18, 1999
Jay Diamond from Mary Esther, FL
This could have been a great movie, but the Rap sound track between scenes ruined the movie. Filthy language with m_____f_____ every 3-5 words was not only unnecessary, but insults most viewers. NOT FOR PERSONS UNDER 13.

5 of 5 Excellent Comedy Friday, September 03, 1999
transistor from Clinton, NY
I was very plesantly suprised by this movie, and ended up seeing it twice when it was in theatres. While a relativly simple comedy, it posesses it's own unique quirks that makes this an extremely worthwhile movie to see, especially for those who work in an office setting. Great job Mike Judge!
