Based on the hit BBC series. A remake of the hit 2001 BBC TV series The Office (2001), this is a mockumentary that documents the exploits of a paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Made up of head chief Michael Scott (Steve Carell), a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy.

With an office including the likes of various peers who have their own hangups, The Office (2005) takes a look at the lives of its co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim (John Krasinski), his mildly sociopathic, butt kissing enemy Dwight (Rainn Wilson), mildly righteous receptionist Pam (Jenna Fischer), and indifferent temp Ryan (BJ Novak).

"The most brilliant send-up of cubicle hell since Office Space."  Maxim

Editor's Note

Based on the popular British comedy of the same name, THE OFFICE takes place in and around the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Using the same mockumentary style as the original, the series succeeds in capturing the quiet desperation of the poor souls working in this socially stifling environment under the direction of delusional boss, regional manager Michael Scott. Comic actor Steve Carell beautifully inhabits the role, playing a man so eager to be liked, he completely alienates people with one stupid antic after another. Blindly believing himself beloved by his employees for his laid-back nature, Michael fails to see that, with the exception of nerdy and bizarre Dwight (Rainn Wilson), he is resented and despised by all. Carell perfectly walks the line between despicable and pathetic, enlisting his audience's sympathies just moments before doing or saying something horribly inappropriate. The second season is even better than the first, with several romantic storylines getting into full swing in episodes like "Email Surveillance," "Sexual Harassment," and "Booze Cruise." THE OFFICE may be a remake, but it has charms of its very own. SEASON TWO contains all 22 episodes from the season.

Putting together in one season a more nuanced and subtle relationship than Ross and Rachel ever managed, Krasinksi and Fischer are actually believable as 'best friends' who are so destined to be together it might as well be written on big letters on their forehead. The reactions they give when the other one expresses preference for any other person or ignores them for even a brief period really says it all. Reactions are Krasinski's forte and they should create a new Emmy award in the category just for him. ...read the full review

Seinfeld was touted as "a show about nothing," but the TV situation comedy that actually fulfills that promise is the excellent American version of The Office, with episodes built around truly mundane office scenarios...The premise is meant to be as dull as possible: a paper distribution company populated by resigned, worn-down long-term employees and I'm-outta-here short-timers...It's a blank slate, in other words, in which the actors can work their characters, and this great cast knows just what to do...Ricky Gervais, who conceived and starred in the original BBC version of The Office, was so funny in the British version that fans of that series were naturally skeptical about the effort to bring the project across the pond with an all-American cast. But the NBC version works very well, in large part because of Carrel, who is not imitating Gervais' character, but doing something all his own. - Ken Dubois
