Based on the hit BBC series. A remake of the hit 2001 BBC TV series The Office (2001), this is a mockumentary that documents the exploits of a paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Made up of head chief Michael Scott (Steve Carell), a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy.

With an office including various peers who have their own hangups, The Office (2005) takes a look at the lives of its co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim (John Krasinski), his mildly sociopathic, butt-kissing enemy Dwight (Rainn Wilson), mildly righteous receptionist Pam (Jenna Fischer), and indifferent temp Ryan (BJ Novak).

Editor's Note

Based on the popular British comedy of the same name, THE OFFICE takes place in and around the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Using the same mockumentary style as the original, the series succeeds in capturing the quiet desperation of the poor souls working in this socially stifling environment under the direction of delusional boss, regional manager Michael Scott. Comic actor Steve Carell beautifully inhabits the role, playing a man so eager to be liked, he completely alienates people with one stupid antic after another. Blindly believing himself beloved by his employees for his laid-back nature, Michael fails to see that, with the exception of nerdy and bizarre Dwight (Rainn Wilson), he is resented and despised by all. Meanwhile, Jim woos engaged receptionist Pam, while both navigate the office politics and "humor" of boss Scott. Carell perfectly walks the line between despicable and pathetic, enlisting his audience's sympathies just moments before doing or saying something horribly inappropriate. THE OFFICE may be a remake, but it has charms of its very own.

"Carell is spot-on...and the show has succeeded in keeping the tone, pacing, and overall awkwardness of the original." 08/19/2005 p.126

Rolling Stone
"[A] bitingly funny, not wholly unrealistic depiction of workplace idiocy." 09/08/2004 120

San Francisco Chronicle 9 of 10
The American version of The Office is not only funny, it creatively pays homage to the original (the first episode is the British version nearly verbatim) and then, in subsequent episodes, comes up with completely separate scripts that define the NBC edition as unique and audaciously clever in its own right. - Tim Goodman

Reel.com 9 of 10
Seinfeld was touted as "a show about nothing," but the TV situation comedy that actually fulfills that promise is the excellent American version of The Office, with episodes built around truly mundane office scenarios...The premise is meant to be as dull as possible: a paper distribution company populated by resigned, worn-down long-term employees and I'm-outta-here short-timers...It's a blank slate, in other words, in which the actors can work their characters, and this great cast knows just what to do...Ricky Gervais, who conceived and starred in the original BBC version of The Office, was so funny in the British version that fans of that series were naturally skeptical about the effort to bring the project across the pond with an all-American cast. But the NBC version works very well, in large part because of Carrel, who is not imitating Gervais' character, but doing something all his own. - Ken Dubois

4 of 5 Pretty darn good Saturday, February 23, 2008
J.R. from Wichita, KS

I had never watched a single episode of The Office before purchasing this set. But I got so tired of hearing everyone rave about it, I figured I'd give it a shot. Fortunately, I enjoyed it. From what I hear, the series gets better in later seasons and it also seemed to get better as it went along in this season. They landed great actors for these roles too. If you enjoy sarcastic office humor, this would be just what you need.

5 of 5 Perfectly imported Thursday, September 28, 2006
Eoin from CA
A fantastic British show that was redeveloped for US audience. Ricky Gervais (writer, director and star of British version) acted as an exec-producer for US show that ran on NBC. Steve Carell plays the role of Michael Scott (a reprisal of Gervais' David Brent in the British version) and carries it off fantastically. Scott is an obnoxious, self-obsessed, selfish management failure who loves to believe that his employees love him and find him incredibly funny. For the audience, all the same cringe-inducing laughs are retained from the British show. If you are one of the legions that loved the British version, the US show is not a let-down by any means. If you don't know what to expect, The Office is the most original mocumentary series produced -- Spinal Tap for cubicled masses. Horrible and fantastic at the same and in my book, a must-have DVD.

5 of 5 The US version of The Office is hilarious! Saturday, August 05, 2006
Big B from Titans Country, TN
I've been a huge fan of The Office (US) since the very first episode. Working in an office myself, it is almost eerie how accurate this series seems to portray the environment of every office I've ever worked in. Steve Carell plays the boss, Michael Scott, and takes the "idiot boss" syndrome to the extreme with terrible decision making, ridiculous & unneccesary antics, and is just plain annoying (...like my boss... did I just say that?). The employees are bored out of their minds and are constantly playing pranks on each other (particularly the office geek, Dwight). Go ahead and buy this DVD, especially if you work in an office environment. You'll enjoy it. (P.S. - some of the humor is so off the wall that you won't catch it the first time through, so try watching the episodes more than once. You'll probably notice things that you never noticed the first time through!)
