 Editor's Note
The true story of Homer Hickam, a young boy trapped in a close-minded coal-mining town in the 1950's. When Sputnik is successfully launched, Homer becomes obsessed with the concept of rocket launching. To the dismay and disgust of the townspeople, as well as Homer's father, he and his friends try to launch a rocket themselves. In some corners of the country, the Soviet Union's launch of the satellite Sputnik meant virtually nothing. Homer Hickam Jr. lived in just such a place, but Sputnik meant everything to him. October Sky is the true story of this West Virginia teen who beat all the odds, avoiding his dad's harsh life in the coal mine--not by playing football, but by winning a national science fair. Played with aching innocence by Jake Gyllenhaal (Homegrown), Homer challenges everything he's been taught to fulfill his dream of building a rocket--starting with something as simple as sitting down with the class nerd in the school cafeteria. Ultimately, he finds himself standing up to his dad, who insists Homer was born to work in the mine. Portrayed to painful perfection by Chris Cooper (Lone Star), Homer's father feels pressure from both the coal company and the union to keep the local mine--and lifeline of the community--productive. It's when Homer and his dad can finally come to understand each other that Homer really becomes a success. Told with a gentle humor (such as the montage of Homer's failed rocket attempts--one after another after another) and set to a rockin' '50s soundtrack, October Sky is a sweet yet sincere coming-of-age story about fathers and sons, communities pulling together and, above all, heroes. - Annlee Ellingson TNT's Rough Cut 0 of 10 Every once in a while, a movie comes along that has the power to change people's lives. October Sky is one such movie. This inspiring true story recounts the coming-of-age of NASA scientist Homer Hickam Jr. Stimulated by the 1957 launch of Russian satellite Sputnik, Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his likable school buds build miniature rockets to compete in a national science fair. Sure, building and launching rockets seems a bit geeky to base an entire movie on, but director Joe Johnston maintains an enjoyable blend of emotional depth, comedy -- they endure several explosive misfires -- and hand-clapping perseverance... Despite that we've seen his character dozens of times, Cooper does a superb job as a soot-covered, emotional void who can't comprehend his son's dreams. The entire cast equally shines, even the four unknown but charming leads who make staring into the sky look good, a passion that leaves the audience with an unforgettable sense to reach for the stars. - Christopher Brandon

5 of 5 They just don't get it!! Saturday, March 18, 2000 rumpole from Yakim, WA
I had never heard of or about this movie, but it certainly is one of the very best movies I have ever seen. Why don't movies like this get the headlines? I cannot say enough good things about it. This is what movies should do...stimulate you to think about what could be....if you put your mind to it. I give it perfect 10's and a thumbs up!!! Get it...show it to your kids...you won't be disappointed!!!! Was this review helpful?

This film will be remembered. I would compare it to The Shawshank Redemption: No huge budget, no eye-popping special effects, no overwhelming soundtrack. This is proof that none of these have to be present to make a great film. This is a story about hope, and about doing what it takes to make what you hope for real. And because the creators relied on substance rather than gimic, people will be watching this film for a long time to come. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 America - If you believe, you will achieve it! Thursday, September 30, 1999 BJ from Baltimore, MD
October Sky is an excellent movie. This story and others like it are what have made America the great country it is today. Watch this movie and don't let anyone still your Dreams. For those with children there is profanity in about 8 spots. I watched it first and marked them so that I just mute them out. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Inspiration for the entire family Saturday, August 21, 1999 Robert from Texas
This was one of the better movies that I have seen this year. I thought they had forgotten how to make films like this. The acting is first-rate and the cinematography is wonderful. It may be gloomy to some, but it truly made you understand the bleak future that was almost a certainty for the main character. I enjoy a film that can transport you to another place and time so realistically that you truly understand the lives of these people. The last few frames of the film do try and wrench a little bit too much emotion from the viewer, but it is easy to overlook. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Determination Thursday, August 19, 1999 A Viewer from
It was so nice to see such compassion in a boy who was destined to become something he believed in.
Today in our society and Hollywood, shows us films representing a wide range of negativity to our youth. Kids need this sort of inspiration and determination even though they think it's far-fetched of what they want to become. Was this review helpful?
