| | | Features: DVD, Widescreen When Ryan Atwood, a tough, guarded, fiercely intelligent 16-year-old plunges headlong into the wealthy, privileged community of Newport Beach, he soon discovers that the ruling families of Orange County are every bit as territorial as the tough crowd with which he ran on the streets of Chino. For Sandy Cohen, the idealistic public defender who takes Ryan in; his wife Kirsten, the linchpin of O.C. society; their awkward adolescent son, Seth; and the beautiful troubled girl next door, Marissa Copper--Ryan's presence will forever change their lives. This 26 disc collection includes all 92 episodes of The O.C.! "...it doesn't star Tori Spelling. That alone makes it better than 90210." Scott Weinberg, DVD Talk "It has secrets, backstabbing, love triangles, and conflict, everything a good soap needs." Shawn McKenzie, Entertain Your Brain! "The mesh of adolescent and mature drama is perfect." Techtite's TV Reviews
 Editor's Note
Unlike past teen dramas such as DAWSON'S CREEK, THE O.C. never takes itself too seriously. Always retaining a sense of humor and self-parodying element, the show displays a keen understanding of its place within pop culture. This self-consciousness comes through in constant references to popular music, fashions, television shows, and even occasionally to THE O.C. itself. The show's fish-out-of-water protagonist, Seth Cohen, is by far the most pop-culture savvy of the bunch, repeatedly expressing his love for indie bands like Bright Eyes, the Shins, and Death Cab for Cutie, and as a result expanding these band's real-life audiences. A half Jewish, comic-book obsessed boy living in Southern California, Seth has never been what one would call "popular." All of this changes however, with the arrival of Ryan Atwood (Benjamin Mackenzie), a kid from the wrong side of the tracks (in this case, Chino), who is taken in by the Cohen family after Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher) rescues him from juvenile detention. This release captures every episode from the four seasons of the show.

| | Professional Reviews | The Flick Filosopher 7 of 10 So far, no gorgeous amnesiac who just blew back into town has turned out to be someone's long-lost spouse/child/evil twin, but there's little else that could make this hit Fox series any sudsier than it already is...The idea is supposed to be that Newport Beach society is just as much a jungle as the working-poor life he knew before, where his low-class mom let her live-in boyfriend beat up on Ryan, but that'd be laughable if only this weren't yet another in a long line of aren't-you-glad-you-aren't-rich anti-wish-fulfillment dramas that invites its audience to sneak an illicit peek at the life of the impossibly wealthy while also suggesting that there's no way you'd want to live it. - MaryAnn Johanson DVD Verdict 9 of 10 There's more to The O.C. than meets the eye; for all of its supposed soap opera trappings, it actually manages to transcend that genre and function at a higher level. That could be because we now live in an age of irony, meaning that the show is self-aware - it mocks convention as regularly as it embraces it (a running gag involving one character's obsession with a show called The Valley drives this home). It might just be the least guilty Guilty Pleasure on television; although some moments of the show are designed with the Guilty Pleasure mentality in mind, it never allows itself to devolve into self-parody or camp - there's enough sincerity throughout to keep everyone involved honest. - Patrick Bromley
