 Editor's Note
Everything is coming up roses for Professor Sherman Klump (Eddie Murphy). His fiancée, the equally brilliant Denise Gaines (pop music star Janet Jackson), loves him for his prodigious mind. Sherman's university has just been offered $150,000,000 for the radical new youth serum Sherman has developed. And the big-eating, trash-talking Klump clan (all played by Murphy) couldn't be happier. The only person who can ruin things now is Sherman's nemesis: his idlike alter ego, the smooth-talking, flashy dressing Buddy Love (also played by Murphy). In an attempt to destroy Buddy once and for all, Sherman manages to locate and extract the DNA strand that represents the last remaining trace of his own private Mr. Hyde. But the gene accidentally mutates with a strand of dog hair, giving birth to a brave new Buddy who sniffs out the Klumps. With the help of Academy Award-winning makeup wizard Rick Baker, Murphy magically disappears into multiple roles for uproarious results. NUTTY PROFESSOR II is a hilarious sequel to the 1996 remake.
 Plot Summary
This sequel to the remake of the original 1963 film features Eddie Murphy reprising his many roles as Dr. Sherman Klump, Buddy Love, and a host of other Klump family members. The film focuses on Klump's efforts to woo a new university professor, Denise (Janet Jackson). After a failed DNA experiment separates Buddy from Klump, he must use Denise's research to squash Buddy once and for all. Of course, Murphy's multirole performance is the highlight of this wacky comedy.

| | Professional Reviews | USA Today "...Serves up Eddie faces of all ages, sexes and girths with the comedic brilliance to burn them permanently into the memory..." -- 3 out of 4 stars 07/28/2000 p.8ENew York Times "...Tremendously funny....[Eddie Murphy] will knock the blues right out of you..." 07/28/2000 p.E14 Entertainment Weekly "...Murphy gets as deep into character as Richard Pryor used to....[Baker's make-up is] ingenious..." 08/11/2000 p.55 Chicago Sun-Times "...NUTTY II is often very funny and never less than amazing, when you consider the work and imagination that went into Murphy's creation of the Klump family....Murphy has an uncanny gift for mimicry..." 06/28/2000 p.27 Total Film "...There's some genuine comic flair..." 11/01/2000 p.100 ReelViews 6 of 10 Nutty Professor II isn't quite long enough to be tedious, but there are stretches when it tries one's patience. Crisper editing probably would have helped, but the filmmakers apparently were reluctant to lose a single frame of Murphy in makeup. The movie also attempts to have a human, semi-dramatic side (Sherman learning to respect himself and his girlfriend; Mom and Pop rekindling their love after all these years), but the saccharine component comes across as cloying, not pleasant. The screenplay (co-written by brothers Chris & Paul Weitz, who are currently on display as actors in Chuck & Buck) is in desperate need of an overhaul. And what does it say about a film when the biggest laughs occur during the end credit outtakes? For a movie that probably never should have been made, the best part arrives once The End is past. - James Berardinelli Reel.com 7 of 10 The Klumps turned out to be a watchable B-movie that didn't come anywhere close to its comedic potential. After a promising opening, we quickly realize that we are in for another ride through the all-too-familiar Jekyll-and-Hyde territory that served as the skeleton of the first film. Only Murphy brings any sense of vitality to the movie as he recreates Mama Anna, Poppa Clesius, randy Grandma, do-nothing Brother Ernie, and Professor Sherman Klump, investing each with a fully fleshed out credibility. More amazing is Murphy's ability to create chemistry among them, which (as in the first film) he does best in scenes around the dinner table...NP2 earns its repeat value from Murphy's often-improvised humor. It's a shame that the plot makes such poor use of his characters as it runs them through setpieces ranging from flat to familiar. But thanks to the DVD format, we can easily skip to the best parts. When these highlight moments are saddled with a nice assortment of bonus features, this is a disc that might just be worth picking up. - Jeffrey Wachs
