| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Producers: Charlotte Caffey, Susanna Hoffs. | | The soundtrack for the coming-of-age flick Now & Then could easily be mistaken for one of those ubiquitous K-Tel collections so popular in the '70s (and that's not necessarily a bad thing at all). Aside from ex-Bangle Susanna Hoffs' breezy title track which closes the set (and hardly sounds out of place), it gathers 11 songs that perfectly capture the pop music landscape of the movie's early-'70s setting, each of them having been a Top Ten hit. Among those are five number ones, including the Archies' bubblegum classic "Sugar, Sugar," Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Knock Three Times," the Monkees' "Daydream Believer," and a pair of chart-toppers from the Jackson 5 ("I Want You Back" and "I'll Be There"). Rounded out with a mix of classic R&B (the Supremes' and the Temptations' "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me"), rock (Free's "All Right Now"), and pop (Vanity Fare's "Hitchin' a Ride"), Now & Then is a seamless time capsule sure to evoke strong memories for anyone who lived through that era. ~ Tom Demalon | | File under bubblegum. Big chewy, everlasting-gobstopper bubblegum, the kind whose flavor never dies. The kind that gets a gooey Michael Stipe to tell some magazine that the Banana Splits meant more to him than The Beatles. Heck, every alterna-rock band with active senses of melody and humor has spent their entire career trying to write one as good as any of the sugary pieces of pink, chewable, perfect pop craft in this brief but ace soundtrack to a nostalgic Demi Moore vehicle. These songs, by bands that are both silly (the Archies and Vanity Fare) and serious (Jackson 5 and Badfinger), are built on crescendoing melodies and chord changes so acrobatic you don't even realize their magnitude--you just remember the hook as long as you live and breathe. Inspirational. |
