| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Plaid: Andy Turner (vocals); Ed Handley. | | Additional personnel includes: Bjork, Mara Carlyle, Leila Arab, Nicolette (vocals); Benet (guitar, violin); Coba (accordion). | | As 2/3 of the magnificent Black Dog Productions, Ed Handley and Andy Turner heralded an age of lushly melodic electronic songcraft. The acrimonious fission of BDP produced Plaid and revived the dashed hopes of the duo's earlier brilliance. But, with only one (legendarily rare) album, a fistful of aliases and quiet production assignments, and a few singles in recent years, Plaid had the appearance of an elaborate tease. | | If the gorgeous NOT FOR THREES is any indication, Plaid just didn't want to rush perfection. The album seems to be directed at those who would dismiss electronica as soulless music made "for machines, by machines." Plaid's music is bathed in the liquor of life and suffused with shafts of light. Seamlessly working in overlapped synthesized melodies, delicate live instrumentation, occasional voices, and funky, colorful beats, the album offers a textural tapestry of unparalleled lusciousness. "Kortisin," "Rakimou," and "Lilith" are nothing less than ambrosial. Mara, Benet, Bjork, and Nicolette (the latter two repaying old favors) trill like nectar-mad swallows. "Myopia" and "Ladyburst" go tropical without a whiff of exotica irony and beg to be nibbled at like wedges of juicy papaya. Total sensory inebriation-but please don't eat the CD. |
| | Artist Overview | | Part of Warp Records' stable of risk-taking techno artists, the British team of Ed Handley and Andy Turner create lush, thoughtful electronica that throbs with humanity and avant garde smarts. As Plaid, Handley and Turner made some well-received singles in the late 1980s, and later joined forces with Ken Downie to form the influential IDM unit Black Dog Productions. The duo split off from Downie in the mid '90s to refocus on Plaid, and in 1997 created what many believe to be their masterpiece, NOT FOR THREES. Plaid toured with Bjork and Orbital, exposing their music to an even wider audience, and in 2006 released the roundly acclaimed GREEDY BABY, a collaboration with visual artist Bob Jaroc. |

5 of 5 Superbly Crafted Electronic Music Sunday, June 30, 2002 Pinkacid from Brillion, WI
Plaid, Ed Handley and Andy Turner, are the creative duo behind this electronic outfit. Leaving from former group Black Dog, an early 90's pioneer of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), they were signed to Warp records. Thier Debut, Not for Threes, is quite possiably one of the best electronic albums i have ever heard. The album starts with an opening track (abla eedio) feeling like another world, full of klings and klangs displaying the groups' expertise in gimmicktry and production. From there you go to Kortisin, with starts off quiet beforing opening to subtle beats. Further into the song ambient guitar licks meld together creating an emotional vibe. Songs after like Headspin (with sounds of whistling), lat (feeling like a late night at a toy factory), fer (with it's vibrant ending), forever, getting, and spudink (an excellent last song) show signs of genious. And you probably figure there are no words to any of the tracks, but in fact there are three on this album. Looking at their discography, this is also the only album so far to feature this novelty. All three (extork, rakimou, and lilith) are excellent and wonderfully done, feat. nicollete (of massive attack fame), mara, and bjork. The execution was top notch, as all the songs delivered what each had to offer. One of the essentials in the genre.
