John Wayne and Stewart Granger star as a couple of lucky miners in Alaska Territory during the 1898 gold rush. Since The Duke is the only man he can trust, Granger sends his pal to Seattle to fetch his fiance (Capucine). Wayne does so, never intending to fall in love with the girl, but he does, leading to conflict between the former best friends. Ernie Kovacs plays a con man whose insidious money and land-grabbing schemes cause grief to everyone concerned, particularly when he finagles Granger into buying a phony diamond as a wedding ring. Fabian plays Granger's younger brother, with less-than brotherly intentions for Capucine. (He also sings the title song, which hit the Top Ten in 1961).

A tough Alaskan gold digger (John Wayne) agrees to pick up his partner's (Stewart Granger) fiancee, but winds up bringing back a beautiful substitute instead. With both men vying for her favor, trouble inevitably breaks out between the best friends, exacerbated by a shifty con-man (Ernie Kovacs) hoping to steal the men's gold claim. The Duke is in usual macho form in this entertaining Alaskan adventure, based on the play BIRTHDAY GIFT by Laszlo Fodor.
Plot Summary
Two men are digging for gold in Alaska -- where there aren't many women to choose from. When one of them misses his lady love too much, his partner goes to Washington in order to bring the lass back to him. Hijinks and romance ensue as the lady and her chaperone fall in love with each other during their voyage.

...pure, unabashed Hollywood hoakum done to perfection. The entire cast plays it with relish and seems to be actually having fun while doing it. Wayne is a joy to watch... Kovacs...gives a wonderfully malevolent performance as the con man. A wholly enjoyable film.
