| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Solo performer: Rodney Dangerfield (spoken vocals). | | Personnel: Rodney Dangerfield (vocals). | | Photographer: Bernard Vidal. | | Rodney Dangerfield's 1980 album No Respect features two of his monologues, "No Respect" and "Son of No Respect," both of which showcase the nervous, self-deprecating brand of humor that made him a star. ~ Heather Phares | | The exploits of the man who gets "no respect" from anyone finally gets what he so richly deserves: Rodney Dangerfield has been immortalized on a little plastic disc. It's a good thing, too, as vinyl copies of NO RESPECT are hard to come by. The years may have dulled Dangerfield's celluloid luster and appeal, but this landmark recording is still the epitome of Rodney, recorded when he was loosening up his Borsch Belt bellyaches and eviscerating his audience with his spiciest and choicest one-liners. | | You know you're in good hands when an album opens with the line, "No respect at all-when I was a baby I was breast-fed by my father!" From there the barbs come sharp and quick. Dangerfield's sweaty swagger, corrosive New York tone, and quick-draw delivery are physically captured on audio; you can almost feel his full-body twitches through the speakers. If you only know Dangerfield from his antics in such classically coarse flicks as CADDYSHACK and EASY MONEY, revisit a prime moment in stand-up history with NO RESPECT. You'll still respect yourself in the morning. | Producer: Estelle Endler; Estelle Endler |
| | Artist Overview | | Though he began writing jokes in his teens, Rodney Dangerfield (born Jacob Cohen in 1921) abandoned comedy for years, and didn't return to hit his stride as a performer until he was in his 40s and assumed the Dangerfield name and persona. In 1969 he opened a comedy club, Dangerfield's, in Manhattan that would serve as a venue for many young comics. His self-effacing "I don't get no respect" routine proved enormously successful, leading to a string of hit comedy films. He appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson 70 times, and played a role in Oliver Stone's NATURAL BORN KILLERS. He died in 2004 of complications from brain surgery. |
