The Nextar 3xi sounded like a great deal from reading the reviews. I wasn't at all pleased, though. It has a very cheap, tinny sounding voice. It is easy to program, but it doesn't seem to know where it is going!! In three out of three tries to program a known destination, the GPS sent me a totally bogus way. In one case, though it accepted the address, it was still telling me to make a U turn when I had arrived at the destination. It is extremely stubborn! Only after many, many miles taking the known best route, did the GPS recalculate and stop demanding that I turn around.
I'm afraid this purchase was a terribly disappointing, non-refundable mistake. Was this review helpful?

Will not buy this one if I had compared more models. Pros: cheap price. That is all and you get what you paid for. Cons: very slow acquiring GPS signals every time it starts. The first time it took nearly one hour, then all the rest times, it will take any where from 5 to 30 min to acquire signal and get it working. That was very annoying when you are on the go with a car in a new place. Worked pretty spotty in areas with lots of high rises, such as downtown Philadelphia and New York city. Often times, it will loss connection to the satellite and need some time to get reconnected. Zoom out/in responses are very slow. Street name labeling is very limited and not enough for clear direction. No text to speech voicing. I bought this one in a hurry for my trip to Philadelphia and New York city. I should have doing more comparison to different GPS and paid a bit more for a better brand. Was this review helpful?

I usually use Delorme gps with my laptop, so I need to adjust to the necessary loss of functionality of a small unit like this.
Pros: Small, easy to use, accurate, quick acquisition of satellites.
Cons: The big one is NO UPDATES for the maps. A request to Nextar for information brought news that I could exchange the whole unit for a new one with updated maps, for a mere $140. This is very bad business practice, and almost amounts to bait and switch. Also, battery life is less than one hour. There are no shopping POIs. Voice cannot pronounce street names.
I'll give it a few more days, but I am considering returning it for a model made by a company with better customer service. Was this review helpful?

This GPS receiver is good for most daily commuting. It pickups GPS signals within 10s and is very simple to use. It comes with the windshield/dashboard mount, a USP cord, a 1GB SD card, a cigarette/car adaptor, and a 120-240V adaptor. Also, it has a built in rechargable battery. The only drawback is that it doesn't speak the names of street roads. It only speaks the names of interstate freeways. It tells you when to turn and also warns you when you drive over the speed limits. Evermore, it re-routes very quick when you miss a turn. It also plays MP3. I find it user friendly and like it a lot. It'd be nice if the screen were a little bit bigger; 3.5" screen size is not good enough. Oh well, for less than $100, what else do you want more. 4 of 5 Pretty good GPS Tuesday, June 17, 2008 A Customer from Glendale, CA
My first GPS unit. Very easy to use, intuitive interface, i was on route within minutes after opening the box.
Didn't test the MP3 and photo functions, but i think this is a very good unit for the value.
Pro: map and direction were precise (so far), although it tend to prefer to route highway over local route. Screen is pan-able like google map, good feature for area overview.
Con: battery life is a bit short. Screen is not anti-glare. Some maps and POI are a bit old.
Overall it's a solid product at a reasonable price, great value! Was this review helpful?

Battery sucks - just doesn't last. Can't use MP3 due to battery doesn't last.
Only wants to use interstate roads.
Mileage accurate.

5 of 5 Worked perfectly Thursday, June 12, 2008 Ernie Sprout from Trivoli, IL
I just got back from a 500 mile round trip to a destination that I was very familiar with. I decided to take the gps along just to see how much different it's route would be from the way I usually go. EXACTLY the same. Even took me down the back roads I use to get to the highway. I even got off the path a couple of times to see what it would do. Told me where to turn around and how to get back on my route. Easy to use interface. Voice is loud and clear. Comes with tons of accessories. Can't beat the price. All of the features works flawlessly. I couldn't find a single thing to complain about. Highly recommend this unit to anyone. In fact, I'm gonna order one for my wife. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 couldnt find me a gas station in new york city Monday, June 09, 2008 A Customer from brooklyn, ny
yesterday my tank was on empty , when it navigated me to 2 gas stations that werent there and one gas station that was long closed. Drove for 30 minutes in the city, almost ran out of gas.
Points of interest need a major update as far as gas stations.
Sends you through toll bridges and tunnels in NYC also, even when you turn off toll roads, which on average are 5-8 dollars here. Sometimes calculates the strangest route which seems to be twice as long. Otherwise a good unit, those points a major flaw, but love to be able to just drag the map and point the finger where i want to go to, instead of entering addresses. Also, if you need get on a highway or a bridge, scroll the map, and hold your finger on the highway or bridge and it show you how to get on it Was this review helpful?

bought the product for my future daughter in law and it has more features on it than the one my wife and myself use. she loves the ease of use and the mp3 player option and of course the pink faceplate.. would recommend this for the person just looking for a gps system or someone that already has one.. Ok, but I wish I had gotten a larger one.
Zoom doesn't go in the order shown on screen.
3d --*2 and #3 Display has bars at top when returning from panning state.
Low volume
These tend to want to use Interstates even when there is a better route.

Pros: Great user interface, easy to use and intuitive. Guiding voice is loud and clear. Standard mini-USB port for data transfer and recharging. Plays MP3s and JPG pictures. User menus are quick and well designed. Map road path is easy to read. Plenty of display options.
Cons: Battery life is very poor. At most you get one hour of use on a full charge. It's better to keep it plugged in all the time and forget the unit has a battery. Intellinav software has some bugs. Some rare times the voice would tell me to turn right but the screen indicated I had to turn left. Voice does not read street names. Battery level indicator not available when using the navigator. i like this GPS unit.
(i'm going to compare it to a $150 Garmin i used recently)
PROS:
1.you can drag the map with your finger left, right , up and down like google maps.(not all gps can do it)
2. you can set destination by pressing and holding screen instead of entering address. You dont have to enter full adress also, it has a suggestion box with all streets that start with R for example
3. The interface is very good, love being able to drag the map.
CONS:
1: the unit very often cannot figure out what direction i'm going , and a couple of times was thinking i was on the neighbouring street. Garmin didnt do that. Not a big problem for me, as i dont use 3d view/rotaiting map, and usually know which way i'm going, but could be for somebody else.
2. Sometimes it would calculate the strangest route which does not seem like the shortest at all.
3. Does not have any bars in the Point of Interest, and thats something i like to explore more than other POIs, but i guess it makes sense.
I like this unit because it shows me the map and lets me scroll it, and the interface is very good. Route calculation is not perfect, but helpful. Its small and fits in your pocket unlike the garmins, which is a big plus. Battery life is not as long, but should be enough for a small trip or 2. I really enjoy driving with this unit. The maps are on an SD card. In order to view pictures or play MP3's you must remove the SD card and insert your own. Loading an SD card with MP3's and JPG's is a lot easier than other players I've bought. Sound quality of the onboard speakers is excellent considering the size of the unit. There is a jack for ear phones. Pictures look okay. A bigger screen would be nice but then power consumption would go up. The battery keeps it playing for at most an hour. The unit comes with a 110v power source and a 12v cigarette plug cord.
I never had a GPS before. The unit can tell you not only your location but altitude. With a pointy object you type on the screen the destination address. The unit vocally tells when a turn is coming up, bings when the turn is to be made and tells you how to get back on course if you make an unscheduled stop.
I can't see ever going back to maps. GPS is wonderful. Was this review helpful?

I bought this as a present for my father, so I haven't been the one using it, but he's very pleased with it. Keep in mind that my father is technologically challenged by most gadgets, so I interpret his frequent use of it to mean it is very user-friendly! I was pleasantly surprised at all the accessories it came with--three faceplates, an A/C charger, USB cable, dash mount, software, car charger...Even a carrying case for the unit! I would recommend this unit, especially for the price. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Slightly Disappointed Sunday, May 25, 2008 mitroman from Pinckney MI
I know this is a refurbished product but I should have received all the parts when shipped to me. There was supposed to be three (3) faceplates but only received one, and 2nd thing the battery life after a full charge is only one (1) hour. Was this review helpful?

Pros: Price, Accuracy, performance, Ease of use, Accessories
Cons: Insufficient POIs
This was my first GPS. Have been testing it the past few weeks on known routes before a planned long trip, and it has been working perfectly. Gives accurate position on map, even in minor lanes. Instructions are audible (loud and clear) and chooses good routes. Speed alert works. MP3 player plays fine. Indoors, I use its internal speaker. In the car, I can hook it to my dollar store cassette adapter (or, if you have a newer car, I guess you can just hook it into the aux/MP3-in). Didn't try connecting it to the computer yet.
The maps are very clear, bright and easy to follow while driving. You can zoom in/out as per your convenience. In short, it does everything I expect it to do, Plus plays my favorite music(Remember though, you must take out the SD card with map/nav info to insert your MP3 SD card {not supplied} there, so you cant do both at the same time. I still haven't got any mp3's to play on it, but the Navigation functions are outstanding. The office where I work does not show up on any Tom Tom or Magellan nav systems, but this one has no trouble in finding it.
The controls are a little tricky to get used to, but after some practice, it works great. Was this review helpful?
