4 of 5 Easy to use. Saturday, May 21, 2005
A Customer from FL
I've used the router for a few months and it has worked fine for me. It was easy to set up and connect to the wireless modem and the range is pretty good. The only problem I have had is with enabling WEP security - I cannot access the internet wirelessly once I enable WEP - this happened with my old computer which had a D-Link wireless card and with my current comp which has internal wireless...but right now I have WPA-enabled and it is working fine.

5 of 5 Good wireless router Thursday, April 21, 2005
Arthur from St. Louis, MO
I got this a few days ago and it took me a while to set it up correctly. In hindsight, I should have read the instructions more carefully especially the sequence of initializing each device (eg. cable modem, router, computer, etc) as the sequence proves to be very important. Also, once the router is set up, the wireless card needs to be enabled because it was disabled by the router (need to go to (for PC) control panel, administrative tools, serivces, wireless zero configuration, property, choose enable, click apply, and click start). Once it is set up, I am very pleased with the product as Netgear has alwasy been one of my favorite networking brand. The online help support is also very knowledgable with your questions (need to register the product before you are able to contact the online technical support).

5 of 5 Holy Smokes! Easy! Wednesday, March 30, 2005
Kimm from Michigan
Could this have been any easier to get working?? I ordered the router and a wireless PC card on Saturday, had them in my house, installed and working wonderfully Tuesday evening. The router and wireless card took a total of 30 minutes to install and test. Amazingly easy setup.

5 of 5 A year later Tuesday, March 08, 2005
Juan Ramon from Oakland, CA
So far I haven't had any problems whatsover with this router. I have the latest firmware, and it has been rock solid since I bought this router last year. I also have the PS111W wireless print server hooked up to the router so the server can print wirelessly. I am pretty much satisfied and very happy with this router. I've tried the firmware for the v3 router, but I ended up having problems so I reverted back to the old firmware. I wanted the v3 firmware for the wpa-psk, but I know there is a better way to secure my network.

1 of 5 crappy router! Thursday, November 18, 2004
A Customer from Madison, WI
I bought this router to connect a wired desktop and a wireless notebook. I installed it and got online with my desktop in 5 minutes, but can't use notebook wirelessly. Somehow figuring, the connection for desktop was lost, and notebook worked then. With same configuration, after another reboot, both computers were not ablt to get online! At this time, the router itself was hot like a stove... I spent a whole night just to get crazy with this router. It's really not stable.

4 of 5 Great value at $10 after rebate but..... Thursday, November 18, 2004
Some Dude from Marquette, Michigan
Works great now but I didn't know what was going on with the 15-second lag communicating with the router. I guess I could have tried tech support but being bull headed tried tweaking and updating firmware for hours before I removed the login name that was defaulted to MR814NA during setup. I have a cable modem and my service doesn't require a login to connect. I should add that by default the software was set up NOT to require a login but it still was trying and the fields were filled in for me. Now things are fine and it works great with both wired and wireless. Too bad I couldn't find any help posted on this glitch in the setup. I should also add there are nice features and an easy interface through your web browser. I can even set access times or block sites for each computer. This could be handy with kids who have computers in their rooms.

2 of 5 Not good enough! Monday, November 15, 2004
A Customer from Matawan, NJ
This MR814 v2 router has less functionality than its previous version MR814 v1. Althought it adds the smart setup process (it's cute but not impressive), but it takes away other important thing out of it ... the "block site list" has less memory to add site names; LAN IP setup can only hold a few reserved addresses.

5 of 5 Exactly what I wanted! Saturday, November 13, 2004
A Customer from Chattanooga, TN
This router was exactly what I was looking for. It provides 4 LAN ports so you don't have to change your existing desktops, but also provides wireless access for any laptop computers you have. It's the perfect solution! Wireless works great, although I had to change positions from under a shelf to something a little higher up and less obstructed. Currently I get an excellent signal on my tablet PC in every room of my 5 bedroom house including the basement and about 30 feet out into the street. I was able to stream audio flawlessly 3/4 of the way to my neighbor's house! Also, the LAN ports are in the back so it also looks much better than my previous D-Link router. I would highly recommend this router, especially if you can get it for $10 with rebates like I did.

5 of 5 Great Product, Right Price Tuesday, October 12, 2004
A Customer from Austin, TX
Although you can find cheaper routers, I have found none that are as stable and "hands off" as this one. Easy to set up, easy to secure your network. Although I couldn't find a way to turn on MAC filtering for the 4 wired ports. Gave this to my parents as a firewall / way for me to get on the net with my laptop when I visit and after setting it up it has been trouble free.

5 of 5 Netgear and Buy.com are Topnotch! Monday, October 04, 2004
q46ward from San Diego, CA
I received my Netgear Wireless Cable/DSL router 802.11b 2.4 Ghz and wireless PC card MA521 less than five days after ordering. Installed both and was up and connected to the internet in less than 10 minutes. Buy.com's free shipping and lowest price over other e-tailors along with the rebates from Netgear made this one of the least expensive (not cheap) deals ever for wireless products. Thank you Netgear and Buy.com for saving me money, time, and frustration.

5 of 5 Instant Wireless Home Network Thursday, September 02, 2004
Clay from Carmel, IN
First a quick word about my favorite online store. BUY.COM is awesome. I always know I'm getting the best price available. The merchandise arrives quickly and their customer service section provides years of history, receipt reprints etc. Now about the Netgear wireless router. I was able to install the router in about 10 minutes. I made one quick phone call to the tech support line of my ISP to get instructions on how to set the DSL modem into 'pass through' mode. This allows the router to act as the DHCP server on my home network. In 8 months, I have not had a single problem with this device even though I switched from cable to DSL service. I can roam all over my house with my WIFI laptop and the connection is FAST. I have a desktop and another laptop connected to the hard-wire ports on the router. My laptop hard drive needed to be replaced and I was able to copy all of my files (5GB) from the laptop to the desktop over the wireless connection. The task would have been impossible without the network.

1 of 5 Setup of Netgear Router Thursday, July 22, 2004
p_hooper from Cocoa, FL
I am relatively computer savvy, but the setup of the Netgear router is so far impossible. I have worked on the setup for over a week, and can get on the net with two desktops and a notebook computer, but none can get email, and only after the end of the week could finally get the three computers to see each other. I can connect all three back to the D-link hub that I had been using and all three work perfectly. All router setup instructions are vague, and Netgear help has been much less than helpful. Guess I'll see if I can get a refund on this, and get something that will actually work!

A Customer from Columbus, OH
First off, the service from Buy.com was great. I chose the free shipping, and it arrived in three days! I had the router set up in a matter of minutes, and my Mac's Airport card detected it and connected to it immediately. The price can't be beat.

4 of 5 802.11B will never be cheaper Wednesday, June 09, 2004
A Customer from Ketchum, ID
802.11B is being replaced by the G standard. This equipment will never be cheaper. This item works fine. The WI-FI coverage is excellent throughout my 650 sq foot condo. The configuration software makes sense. Hint: For increased security: change the Router's IP from the default (192.168.0.0) and change the password from the factory default.

5 of 5 Love this router Wednesday, April 07, 2004
A Customer from Los Angeles, CA
I've used this router for over a year with NO problems whatsoever...and I'm a novice at this. I still remember how impress I was at how easy everything work! I look at this price and can't believe it, of course, over a year ago, this router was much more expensive but everything wireless has come down in price. I highly recommend this router.

1 of 5 Will not work with AOL Saturday, February 28, 2004
John from San Francisco, CA
We have had the router for a couple of days, have spent about 8 hours working on it. Several hours on hold trying to connect to netgear support (no luck - they hang up on you after a while) and AOL say they cannot help us. I notice two other reviewers are having similar problems. Hummmmmm

5 of 5 TechyNotSoSavvy Wednesday, February 11, 2004
Baja_Sabana from Exeter, NH
This unit was pretty easy to setup, kind of a no-brainer item. Although, I did run into some troublesome issues in getting the firewall feature working and called tech suppoort. They were terrible, multi-nationals that were seemly insulting and not helpful in the least for anyone that has a clue how to open a window, let alone look at the device manager... The long and short is I didn't register it properly and the techies couldn't look that one up in their manual. Sooo, it's registered under false pretenses and I can't use the firewall feature. I just couldn't stand one more minute of tech suppoort hell. Works great from 25-30 feet, through 3 walls, using the netgear card, small, lightweight, unobtrusive... Very easy, no problems after 3-4 months...

5 of 5 Great Deal Sunday, February 01, 2004
Mark from Devon, PA
I recently bought this router with the MA521 card for my notebook. I cannot stress how easy it was to set this up with my DSL connection. I really just plugged the wire's and card in and the router found my DSL connection automatically. I did get the bundle which was a great deal with the rebate. I should mention that if you get the bundle (card & router) you get the MR814v2, and I have seen some comments of people who have had problems, but I have to think that it is really just people that don't know what they are doing, more than the product because I have had nothing but a great experiance. I should also mention that I live in an apartment so the range isn't really and issue and sure enough I get great reception and in real world use I normally get around 5Mbps between my computers and it is more than fast enough so that I get no negative effects with my DSL connection. Although I don't stress the range living in an apartment, there are 4 other networks other people have that I can see using the included utility and I never have any problems with our networks causing problems with each other. There is some good security (not geat) included, just make sure you use them. Both products support 128 WEP (set up a good key), it has a firewall, and turn off SSID broadbasting so people have to know the name of your network in order to log into it (change the default name too), and of course limit MAC addresses to your computers. It doesn't have the newer WPA, but no 802.11b products do, you have to have the faster G product for that. For the vast majority of people, 802.11b is fast enough for now, and to get both products for less that $50 after rebates it is a no-brainer. Excellent product, probably the best computer add-on I have bought in a very long time.

1 of 5 NetGear MR814v2 not AOL friendly Tuesday, January 13, 2004
A Customer from Houston, TX
I have been trying to get this router to work will AOL Cable for three weeks. I have spoken to Netgear support (worthless) as well as AOL support. No solutions. I have read various internet solutions and although most recommend the same course of action. I still can not get this router to work. If I had to do it over, I would get the Link as it is setup for AOL's unique problems.

5 of 5 Look no further!! Thursday, November 20, 2003
PCBadAss from Jacksonville, FL
This must be the best all-round home router I've ever used. I am a PC tech, and I found this to be versatile, easy, and STYLISH! It works great with my wireless PowerBook, wired Dell, and even my XBOX!! It allows reservations for IP addresses for a nice combo DHCP/StaticIP setup. It seems to have features that were missing on my old LinkSys. The user interface has wizards, definitions, and help, making it great for both techies and the lesser. It is quite small and SLEEK!! It can be mounted on a wall or under a desk, and comes equipped with a cool "sideways" stand for a quick small-footprint setup. I can't give it enough praise.

5 of 5 Almost too easy Sunday, November 16, 2003
A Customer from Canfield, OH
Setting up a network with this and the Netgear wireless laptop card took about 10 minutes, and that is only because I read the directions. Everything was plug and play. Very simple for anyone to accomplish. The unit has good range and the price after rebate is obscenely low for such a product.

1 of 5 NOT Macintosh OS X AOL compatible !!!!! Saturday, November 08, 2003
ktilford from Topeka, Kansas
This is NOT Macintosh OS X or AOL for OS X compatible!!! Hence, if you use OS X you will not be able to download FTP correctly, and I imagine that certain games and internet services like News will not work. AOL for OS X does NOT allow Sign-on and will not work. This is a NetGear known fault, and other wireless routers like the Linksys or Airport do not have this issue. It appears to work correctly with my PC's, but this is not acceptable since the standard is a communications protocol and should be platform independent. NetGear is a PC oriented company, hence they fix Centrino problems, but let Macintosh hang when Macintosh practically INVENTED wireless networking. SHAME.

5 of 5 very easy to set up and use Monday, September 15, 2003
A Customer from Naperville, IL
I got this and the Netgear wireless card and was able to install on my desktop system w/ XP w/ a cable modem. I put the wireless card in my laptop w/ Windows 2000 and I was up and running in a couple minutes. It even worked w/ my IPSEC VPN. After rebates, the price was $65 for the router and wireless card, so it's a no brainer. I am a home user and don't need the 802.11G. I do notice that sometimes when we use our 2.4 Ghz cordless phone, the connection drops when I'm logged on to my company's VPN using IPSEC, but that's not all the time.

1 of 5 Won't work with AOL Cable. Horrible tech support Friday, September 12, 2003
A Customer from Dayton, Ohio
I've had this router for 5 weeks now and still can't get it to work with my AOL Cable. I've talked to tech support about 6 times now and they can't figure out problem. Promised to have second level tech support call me -- which didn't happen. Tech support is clueless. Extremely difficult to get through to tech support and don't help even when you do. This product has been a complete waste of money.

4 of 5 MR814 a breeze to use Sunday, June 29, 2003
richjb54 from Groveland, MA
I was skeptical as were others about any wireless product, but am pleased to report that the Netgear MR814 will put all questions to rest. I have 2 computers on a second floor with MA101 USB adapters that receive no lower than 92% signal strength from the router on the first floor. This is great considering the horror stories I had heard about other brands...not so with Netgear! However, the router itself, though easy to install, did not work at first on the other computers. Customer Support must be called in to assist in re-configuring the MA101 units. Netgear's support was ok, but they did not get the other computers running and referred me to a Level 2 Tech Support (whom was supposed to call within 24 hrs and a week later have not called). The support people are not too fluent in their knowledge of how the units work together. I found the fix myself through common sense...Netgear kept teling me the router will pick up the MA101 without any problem, but failed to agree with me that the MA101 had to be added to the router software (they insisted this didn't need to happen). Once configured, all went well and has not stopped since. I'd highly recommend these products, but be wary if you need Tech Support from Netgear.

5 of 5 Very pleased! Wednesday, June 25, 2003
A Customer from Ashland, KY
Replaced a Linksys router with this one. It was very easy to set up and works great. I love the features it has such as content filtering. Also, daily logs and attempted access to filtered sites are emailed to me so I know the sites my children are viewing and if they tried to access a site that I have blocked; a great tool for parents. You can't beat the price either!

4 of 5 1st wireless experience Friday, May 16, 2003
A Customer from san jose, ca
This is my 1st wireless experience. I had to access the configuration page through the CD supplied. I could not access the 192.168.0.1 url by typing it in myself in my browser. The instruction manual did not say you had to access the config page via the CD it came with. Otherwise once I figured that out, the installation went fine and easy. I also configured the netgear wireless PC card in my laptop, and so far going through 4 walls the speed is acceptable. This is only my 1st day/evening with both the wireless dsl 4-port router and its wireless card

5 of 5 Outstanding Customer Support Friday, May 09, 2003
Daak from St. Louis, MO
Installation was quick and easy, even for a novice. Unfortunately, I had to rely on customer service for help since I was having internet connection/speed problems. They walked me through firmware upgrades for the router and my DSL modem. My download speeds are faster now than when the DSL modem was connected directly to a PC. I now have 3 cabled PCs and a wireless laptop all running with no problems. Great product, great price, great 24 hr service, and a rebate to boot

5 of 5 The Best Wireless Router for an AMAZING Price Saturday, April 26, 2003
aussie983 from Cary, NC
This is one of the best wireless routers i have ever used in my experience networking. This router has greatly improved on the MR314 with greater wireless range and a great new case. Some say the case is a little flimsy, but its not ment to be moved around anyways (Its a wireless router :-P). Compared to other 802.11b products i've used this by far has the best range. I live in a 3500 square foot house and can go anywhere on my property and access the router (Even in parts of the neighbors houses as well). Hands down the best 802.11b Wireless 4-port Router on the market today.

5 of 5 Great Purchase! Monday, March 31, 2003
A Customer from San Francisco, CA
I bought this router and 2 Netgear PC cards (MA401), and I had a desktop wired and two laptops wireless to my DSL connection in about 20 minutes. It was totally easy and it works great. This is a really good deal! Be aware of what distances you need to go though -- I originally had the router in the front of the house and was unable to use the laptop in the rear, but once I put the router in the center I can access from all rooms.

5 of 5 This is the best bang for your buck! Saturday, March 22, 2003
Nate from Minnesota
This thing works great! Took less then 30 mins to set up with my main computer and less then a min with my Apple PowerBook G4. Great range covers all over my house with full signal strength. I'm really suprised how easy it all was to setup. Overall i think this is the best value that's out there. I thought about getting the Apple Airport but by getting this i just saved myself 200 bucks!

5 of 5 Amazing Product Sunday, March 16, 2003
jdelrio from Miami,FL
Well I ordered this product mostly because of the price and I've been amazed. I've always relied on NETGEAR products and this one is absolutely wonderful. The installation was a cinch and it was so easy to figure everything out. The admin page for the router is mapped out wonderfully and I never second guessed where something would be placed under. Great and EASY product for anybody looking to network their house. Good speeds too.
