1 of 5 Wish I could rate it at zero. Friday, August 10, 2007 A Customer from New York, NY
Installation of the driver would not complete in my Windows 2000 computer. Netgear tech support suggested I find a neighbor with a Windows 2000 computer so I could test it. Gave up after reading negative reviews that the card didn't work on some Windows 2000 machines. I'll buy linksys from now on and make sure my neighbors do too! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good combo with Netgear WGR614 Friday, March 16, 2007 gmurphy333@epix.net from Warren Center, PA
I purchased the WG511 Netgear PC card with the WGR514 router and have been mostly pleased. My laptop is an older IBM 600x running Windows XP. The PC Card was recognized immediately. The modem/router was relatively easy to set-up with the Netgear software, however, using the Windows XP network set-up may be more difficult. Once the network is running, it was simple to "share" files betweeen my desktop and laptop. I was a bit disappointed in the range...with the desktop on the first floor and the laptop upstairs (about 50 ft apart), the wireless connection strength is barely adequate. The prices from Buy.com were competitive and the fast shipping is a plus. Was this review helpful?

After doing a little research, I picked up this card because of the great price, the rebate and the good reviews. The first thing I did was download the updated software and install it. From beginning the software install to network detection took 2.5 minutes. It would have only taken 1.5 minutes but I had to get my WEP key from my router in order to log onto the network. I'm writing this review from my hammock in my backyard with 100% signal at 36 Mbps. I'm even able to pick up other wireless networks my roommate's card can't. Great Card. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A Great Purchase Monday, November 15, 2004 Dr. Jefferson Hatch from Newton, New Jersey
I added this wireless network card to an old P2 laptop lying around the house, loaded the driver, and voila! It connected immediately to my Netgear wireless access point and now my kids are roaming the house doing IM's and homework. I did some research on this product and found out it was rated tops with C|NET for both range of connectivity and value, and buying it here on this site was the cheapest I could find it anywhere (MUCH cheaper than my local Staples) and it arrived within 2 days of ordering. 5 of 5 GREAT WIRELESS CARD Saturday, August 21, 2004 A Customer from MADISON, MS
EASY SETUP, GREAT PERFORMANCE Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Very happy with my purchase Saturday, August 14, 2004 A Customer from West Bloomfield, MI
Easy installation.
Works on W2K and 98 (I have 2 cards).
At least 6 Mbps everywhere in my house even though the location of the base (Netgear WG614 or close to that) is not ideal. 48 or 54 Mbps is most rooms.
Need to closely follow instructions when upgrading firmware AND utility. Was this review helpful?

This card works great with the updated drivers and connects consistently with my netgear router. however, it has problems or small delays in connecting with non-netgear routers. I have to reinsert the card a few times with other name brand routers for the card to finally connect properly with the network.
For the price it's great as long as you use all netgear equipment. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good product, works well Tuesday, June 08, 2004 Ryan from Dayton, Ohio
The card works equally well for me on an 802.11g network at the office and a 802.11b network at home. The taskbar icon allows you to open the configuration and change the network profile very quickly. I've used it with a Netgear access point and a Linksys router, with and without WEP, and it does very well.
The WG511's range and performance is almost as good as a built-in Dell 1300 wireless card, which is installed on another notebook in my office.
On some rare occaisions, the driver crashes, but I have not tried any updates to the driver or firmware; in addition, it only occurs while coming out of hibernation after the network or card has been removed. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Overall Pretty Good Tuesday, April 20, 2004 John from Burton, Ohio
Hooked up unit and had to upgrade the firmware, registered the product and called the tech support. If you can speak the language of India, your in luck cause I couldn't understand a word. I decided to just answer my own question on the firmware. After the upgrade the update page still was not working that well but it wasn't to bad getting the item configured and the speed was very well and item overall was a great price with the rebate. I wasn't to happy with the shipping, it was free but 11 total days is slow from being sent from one state over. Overall the product was a plus cause its buy.com price. Make sure you do the frimware upgrade first thing.Since the support was hard to understand I gave a 4 and also a 4 for overall since firmware was way out. Was this review helpful?

I was not able to connect to my SMC wireless router until I performed a driver and firmware update on the WG511 from Netgear's site. After update, connection worked well. This is the first card I've had to do this with so you may want to start with the latest drivers and not even install from the CD included -- I do this for a living, but for that one problem, I rate Ease of Use a 3 for the typical home user. I must commend Netgear on the ease of Driver and Firmware updates. Nicely done. Was this review helpful?

Installation only took 20 minutes, purchased 2 WG511 cards & 1 WGR614 wireless router, I have an ASDL connection, wireless speed is nearly as fast as the ASDL connection plugged directly in laptop, hi-speed connection from anywhere in the house and outside on the deck. Highly recommend this product, I installed the router & 2 cards and was up and running in about 45 minutes. Was this review helpful?
