I have fiber optics internet connection at home, and a wireless modem. I wondered if I could do away with my Verizon land phone altogether. Skype lets you make PC-to-PC (free) and PC-to-phone (for a fee) calls through the internet. And if you purchase a Skype-In number, you can also receive calls from land and mobile phones on your PC.
But one major drawback to the above scheme of doing away with your landline is you need to have your PC/laptop on all the time.
Thus, enter a VOIP enabled handheld device that can directly communicate with your modem bypassing any PC/laptop.
I got this Netgear phone about two weeks back for about $150. It is small and cute. The buttons could be better. A basic cell phone has better address book interface. It communicates well with my wireless modem. As soon as I got it out of the box, it picked up the modem without any difficulty, and all I needed to do was to enter my WEP passkey.
Calls are made and received by this phone without any problem anywhere within the home. Calls are not dropped.
But is this a land phone replacement? Not quite. Call quality is average at best, poor at times. There is delay and echo, espcially for the other party. Some packets are lost. The quality of Skypes PC to PC calls is typically better. If I need to make an important phone call, I tend to use my cell phone.
I haven't tried the phone in any other location. In any case, it won't work at a hotel or airport where you need to make a browser based authentication.
So, in summary, this Netgear Skype phone is good, does the job, but not great. Do not give up your landline yet! Was this review helpful?

It took two hours to crack the secret code to connect to our network, then trying to this phone to do anything became a real headache. When you push the button on a phone you expect an immediate result, not a 2-3 second delay in any command.
If you want IP telephony, get Vonage and a regular set, you'll go crazy with this phone. Was this review helpful?

Instructions poorly written, clock resets itself constantly.
Does not work well with satellite, reception is spotty with a lot of broken conversation. Poor operation on cloudy days.
Price was good. Works well with DSL as long as you stay close to router. Was this review helpful?

I use Skype for my long distance calls. This phone with WIFI is perfect. Excellant call quality, simple to use. I have not tried it on WIFI away from home yet. I have a Skypein number in another
