| | | Provides extra storage that can be conveniently shared with all your computers
The ReadyNAS Duo is perfect for homes with more than one computer. Unlike a USB drive, the ReadyNAS connects to the network and is simultaneously accessible via all connected Windows or Macintosh computers.
Access stored content anywhere via the Internet
If there is a broadband Internet connection and a home router, the ReadyNAS can be set up to provide secure access to all the stored files remotely via the Internet.
Optional spare hard drive protects against drive failure by making a duplicate copy of all your data
For added protection of stored data, an optional second hard disk drive can be installed. The spare hard drive will keep an extra copy of all the data and instantly take over if the first hard drive should fail.
Supports most network music, picture and video players
Advanced media streaming support allows the ReadyNAS to directly serve media, with no PC required, to devices such as the NETGEAR EVA products, Sonos Digital Music System, Logitech Squeezebox, Apple iTunes clients, Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360.
Embedded BitTorrent client for direct downloading from the Internet
Officially licensed BitTorrent client allows downloading to occur without the need for an additional computer. A Web-based interface facilitates download management from computers, and combine it with the NETGEAR EVA products to bring media to your entertainment center.
ReadyNAS Vault
Integrated offsite backup for files and folders. Optional ReadyNAS Vault backup software is built right into all ReadyNAS storage systems. Simply determine what you want protected and ReadyNAS Vault automatically and securely handles the rest.

Mac-friendly
All ReadyNAS systems support the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) and Apple Time Machine so multiple Mac users can use a central location to share files and do backups. Bonjour software enables auto-discovery and Macintosh status monitoring widgets are supported.

5 of 5 good entry level nas for small business Thursday, May 14, 2009 ryk1998 from Seattle Wa
we did a lot of research before committing to this nas and determined it was really best bang for your buck (better now with rebate to June 2009). what we liked best about it was the ease of use, the automatic mirroring if you leave the settings that way, the user forums available for ongoing devleopment and updating (see readynas.com) and the ongoing firmware enhancements from netgear. netgear bought a company called ifrant I think the name is, and labelled that company's product under the netgear branding. I am convinced support is very good from netgear as they are moving into the nas market in a major way in the last couple of years since acquiring ifrant. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Awesome AND aggrivating Tuesday, May 05, 2009 rickman777 from Tulsa, OK
The drive arrived quickly and setup was plug and play - however to get all the functionality out of this unit you'll have to KNOW what you're doing - documentation is thin (from manufacturer) and while it does tell you WHAT it does, gives you nothing more if you don't know the terminology. Good news plenty of info on the web. But it streams video on a busy network better than my quad core HP tower! So I'm VERY satisfied in that area and Netgear claims it can stream up to 4 HD videos AT ONCE! I look forward to finding out about that! The only downside is I didn't do my homework and thought I could use the unit in a JOB configuration - NO deal RAID ONLY. I can live with that, just need to buy a couple more..... Integrated flawlessly into my home network using the Netgear WGT624. With all my media files stored on the ReadyNAS Duo, I can access them from any computer or media player on my network, including my PS3. This comes in handy when I download movies; I can view them on my home theater projector using the PS3. Now I can watch a movie in the theater while my wife listens to mp3's in the bedroom; at the same time you view a picture slide show in the family room. Streaming may get a little choppy with HD movies. All I need now is a 802.11n router for seamless data transfers. Was this review helpful?

I echo all the positive comments of the previous reviewers. Netgear, in general, produces very professional and solid products. The RND is expertly made and comes with a complete, fully-refined set of operational features (no need to grab version upgrades off the Web). It's ready to go as soon as it's plugged in and is virtually silent when running.
I particularly like the idea that as disks become cheaper I can gradually increase storage without cumbersome procedures. I can add a 1TB drive to the current 750GB drive, and it will automatically create a RAID pair. Later, I can replace the original 750GB drive with a 1.5TB unit, and I will then have a 1GB RAID setup. It provides RAID security with easy upgradeability. Was this review helpful?

I purchased the NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo based on a recent review in PC World. The unit is impressive in its simplicity, however read the directions carefully and completely before setting up the program. It has proven to be much more difficult to set up in a network environment than stated in PC World's review or the installation instructions. We are still struggling to get backups on networked PCs and have not found any help either on the installation disk or the NETGEAR web site. Resetting the router seems to induce problems with the IP addresses, which can only be cleared by restarting every PC on the network. Was this review helpful?
