1 of 5 Not a VPN solution Friday, January 25, 2008 A Customer from N/A
I wasted my money on these boxes as a remote office communication solution. Each appliance went down many times a day. Most often the appliance would simply reboot. I finally purchased a linksys solution for 2.5x the price. I will know if that solution works in a week or so. Was this review helpful?

I would have given this product a 5 across the board except for 2 things. I tried to download and update to the lastest firmware, V 2.1.2-40 but it rendered the device inoperable. I couldn't even get into the management interface through a cable connection. I have to say Netgear tech support was very good at working me through the issue. I actually bought 2 of these and had the exact same problem with both, so I feel it has to be the firmware. The firmware back out process is very flaky. One of the device allowed me to get to the reset mode after about 3 tries, the other one took about 20 tries - not kidding! Once I loaded a back level firmware, V 1.0.49, both devices are working fine. I see Netgear only offer the V 2.1.2-40 firmware now. I guess they like people to call their support line! LOL!
The other issue is that my previous Netgear router, a home model, had slightly better range. In my situation it's not a problem, but it might be for some if you are at the limit of your current wireless router's range.
I have yet to implement the VPN feature, but I have faith it will work and Netgear offer 90 day configuration assistance. Overall this is a good product. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Awesome product Tuesday, September 25, 2007 A Customer from Marlboro, NJ
Great value for a router/firewall/wireless G box. Does a great job and is very configurable/reliable. Was this review helpful?

This is the only thing that stops me from giving it a score of 5 all the way around. It seems that about once a week or so, any one of my computers/laptops/workstations stops being able to communicate with it. The problem is solved by just powering down the unit & then turning it back on. Because it does this with different machines inconsistently, I am led to believe that maybe it is a flaky BIOS, or something along that line. Nonetheless, if you need more than 4 ports (as I do), then this is a very solid value. Was this review helpful?
