MCP from Lubbock, TX
I'm running this box on an 8-user LAN behind an Efficient 5660 DSL router. I'm using port-forwarding and url keyword-blocking. Performance has been great after 2 weeks use. My only complaint is that I can't disable smtp dropped packet logging. Was this review helpful?

We have cable internet, and this router/firewall is awesome. Not only does it block those fraudulent "messenger service" pop-ups that we used to get about 10 times a day, but it also kept our home computer free from the blaster worm/virus that hit a month ago or so (our work computer, with no firewall, was corrupted). I am a Network Analyst for a large school district. I work with advanced routers and firewalls (Cisco) daily. On my home computer, I was using a software based firewall such as Zone Alarm, but got tired of the problems. I did quite a bit of research before deciding on the FR114P. I chose it because of four reasons:
1)SPI firewall examines the packets rather than just hiding your IP address like NAT only routers.
2)Built in print server allows you to attach your printer directly to the FR114P. This makes it easy for all the computers to use the same printer. With WinXP or 2000, no extra software is needed, the printers print directly to the FR114P.
3)Supports pass-thru of the three most popular VPN types.
4)Price
The only downside of this router is that it does not have the ability to log every web site that is visited. I did not find any other router with the above features that will log web sites.
If you want wireless, then you can still connect an external wireless access point to this router. Netgear sells both 802.11a and 802.11b. Using one of these with the FR114P would give the best of both worlds. Was this review helpful?
