I've been waiting for an inexpensive "dongle-less" pcmcia network card for a long time, so when I found one from Netgear I had to give it a try. The card installed without any problems and works great. There were even drivers on the CD that allow the card to work in DOS mode so I can "image" my laptop hard drive with Norton Ghost - a driver that most manufacturers don't include with their products. It's also nice in that it allows my second pcmcia slot to be used for another card. Highly recommended. Was this review helpful?

Netgear equipment has always been a favorite of mine because it is generally inexpensive, easy to use, and easy to setup. I was delighted to hear that the new FA411 which replaces the FA410 would no longer have a dongle (the PCMCIA Ethernet Card Media Coupler for UTP cable)! Especially since I've replaced about 30 damaged or lost dongles at my company in the last year alone. That's about $700 worth of 8 inch long cables lost or damaged in ONE year! Not to mention the cost of having to FedEx dongles Priority Overnight to the dozen or so salespeople who lost/forgot theirs and absolutely MUST have a new one right away to give that next big sales presentation.
Here's where the "GOTCHA" comes in... Be VERY aware that this device will stick out of the PCMCIA slot by about 4cm! It does NOT sit flush with the opening of the PCMCIA port as the cards from Xircom do! Sure you no longer have a dongle you can loose/break, but now you'll end up loosing/breaking the entire card since you need to remove it in order to pack your computer in a travel case! Also, busy salespeople will either try packing their PC's with this card still in them, or they will yank the card out (without properly ejecting it) and before long the card, and probably the PCMCIA port on the PC are going to be nonfunctional.
To be entirely fair, there IS a good side to this design. Since the Ethernet port and the larger housing needed to hold it are external to the PCMCIA slot, you can still use this card with another card in the second PCMCIA slot if you have two PCMCIA card slots as most notebook PC's do. What would be a support problem for me ends up being a benefit to others who need to be able to use that second PCMCIA slot.
Personally, as someone who has to support these professionally, I am NOT happy with the design of this card, and will return the few I purchased for a refund. I'll end up paying a bit more to get something that will sit flush with the PCMCIA opening in the PC. I'm just disapointed this means I'll no longer be purchasing Netgear equipment for this purpose.
