But this is no ordinary band of outlaws; Caleb is now trapped in a nightmare of soulless evil that waits in the shadows, hellish mayhem that thrives on blood and absolute horror that begins Near Dark.
Bill Paxton (Twister) and Jenette Goldstein (Aliens) co-star in this extraordinary shocker co-written and directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days) that Entertainment Weekly calls "ultrastylish, ultraviolent andialtogether brilliant." This is more than simply the most ferociously original vampire movie of our generation; Near Dark is one of the best horror movies of all time.
 Editor's Note
A young cowboy is seduced by a new girl in town only to find out he has been kissed by a vampire. Slowly turning into a creature of the night, he is persuaded to join up with the girl and a roaming band of ghouls. But when his own father and sister become targets in the vampires' endless search for 'food,' he is forced to choose between loyalty to the vampires, or loyalty his own family. NEAR DARK is a stylish and brutal mixture of horror, western, and action conventions from director Kathryn Bigelow (STRANGE DAYS) that ranks among the best vampire movies ever made.

5 of 5 Masterful, Funny, and Frightening Tuesday, October 05, 2004 jdiddy04 from Thompsonville, IL
After watching "Near Dark" was when I realized that the B-movie horror genre was completely underrated. This film had everything that a horror film should: humor, mystery, suspense, blood, and most of all, mysterious characters that let the viewer imagine where these people might have come from.
"Near Dark" is a contempory vampire film without the gothic entrails of a "Bram Stoker's Dracula." It has fresh new ideals in the vampire realm that had never been seen before this moment in cinema time. It's a masterful film that leaves the viewer thankful that he/she is human and that is the best feeling in the world. Was this review helpful?
