Peeples. | | Unknown Contributor Role: James Taylor . | | Arrangers: David Campbell ; Norman Kurban. | | Thanks to James Taylor for encouraging Carole King to pursue a solo singing career after successful songwriting careers in New York with husband Gerry Goffin and Los Angeles with Toni Stern, which preceded a failed attempt singing in the City, who recorded a no-go album for Ode Records prior to King's first solo LP. Natural Woman: The Very Best of Carole King features the songstress/composer's popular singles -- "It's Too Late," "So Far Away," "I Feel the Earth Move" -- and interpretations of songs she wrote for others -- "Natural Woman," "Oh No, Not My Baby," a live version of "Up on the Roof" with James Taylor, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," and "Some Kind of Wonderful." King's soprano, while not the strongest vocal instrument, was effective and heartfelt. ~ Andrew Hamilton | | Carole King had already written an enormous amount of pop classics by the time she began her solo career in earnest in the late '60s. With her second album, Tapestry, King became one of the most popular and artistically successful singer-songwriters of the early '70s. King never matched the consistent brilliance of Tapestry, yet managed to record many fine songs during the rest of the decade. A Natural Woman collects all of her finest moments over the course of two discs. Tapestry is included in its entirety, along with the highlights from her other albums, making A Natural Woman the one essential King album -- apart from Tapestry itself, of course. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | | The two-disc set A NATURAL WOMAN collects the highlights of Carole King's eight-year tenure at Lou Adler's Ode Records. Of course, of the several albums she released between 1968 and 1976, one stands out above all others; TAPESTRY is an all-time classic, the definitive '70s singer/songwriter album and the epitome of piano rock. A NATURAL WOMAN treats the album with the respect it deserves, including it in its entirety. | | What's remarkable about this 36-track collection is that as brilliant as songs like "It's Too Late," "Where You Lead" and "So Far Away" are, the rest of the set is nearly up to their level. In fact, listening to the songs from the follow-up RHYMES AND REASONS, it's remarkable that this album didn't match the stratospheric commercial success of its predecessor. The set also includes rarities like the 1972 movie song "Pocket Money" and four unreleased tracks, two live takes including a duet with James Taylor on "You're Got A Friend" and two surprisingly fine outtakes from RHYMES AND REASONS. | Producer: John Fischbach; Lou Adler | Engineer: Eric Weinbang; Hank Cicalo | Musical Guests | | James Taylor |
