| Author Bio| Greil Marcus | | Greil Marcus has written on rock & roll since the mid-1960s, when he was the record review editor for Rolling Stone magazine. His book MYSTERY TRAIN, a study of the careers and influence of a selection of significant artists, including the Band, Elvis Presley, Sly Stone, and Harmonica Frank, is considered one of the seminal texts of rock & roll criticism. Born in Menlo Park, California, in 1945, Marcus was educated at the University of California at Berkeley during the political foment of the mid-1960s. His exposure to student radicalism around this time resulted in his blending of music criticism and modern political philosophy, which created a controversial genre of musical analysis that has continued to influence writers well into the 21st century. Subsequent books like LIPSTICK TRACES and INVISIBLE REPUBLIC continued to unearth America's underground "secret history" through the songs of its musicians, making connections (variously seen by critics as either far-fetched or thrilling) between art, politics, and an array of social movements. Marcus's wide-ranging, freethinking writing on a variety of music-related subjects has also been published in the Village Voice and Artforum, and on an assortment of online websites. |
