Russell Brand learned early on to make a joke of fear and failure. From a troubled childhood in industrial Essex, England, to his descent into addictions to alcohol, drugs, and sex in the seamy underbelly of London, Brand has seen his share of both and miraculously lived to tell the tale. In My Booky Wook he leads readers on a rollicking journey through his disastrous school career, his infamous antics on MTV, and his multifarious sexual adventures. But this irreverent memoir is a story not simply of struggle but also of redemption, a testament to the difficulty of discovering what you want from life and the remarkable power of a bloody-minded determination to get it. My Booky Wook is a giddy trip through the brilliant mind of one of Britain's most valuable exports.

Annotation:
UK comic and MTV's goof-of-the-moment Russell Brand reminisces about his history of drugs, eating disorders, alcoholism, depression, self-mutilation, and more drugs. And did I mention drugs yet? Brand puts Robert Downey Jr. and Keith Richards to shame with his whimsical tales of swapping saliva-covered drugs with strangers, sharing heroin needles with the homeless, and (perhaps as an ode to Richard Pryor) lighting himself on fire while smoking crack. Sure, it was all terrific fun while it lasted, but "Remember, kids, don't try this at home." The calmer, cleaner Brand is only providing these details of his degradation so that the rest of us can mercifully avoid such delightful debauchery.

Praise
"MY BOOKY WOOK is a richly detailed memoir that's peppered with both evocative descriptions of the author's homeland and memorable lines..." - Clark Collis 03/20/2009

"[Brand] is not just charming but also quick-witted, as evidenced by his entertaining memoir...[which] offers surprisingly sharp insight into his own excesses and frailties, vividly depicting his working-class childhood..." - Joy Press 03/13/2009

"You can get away with admitting your very worst behavior, Mr. Brand tells us here, if you simply precede that admission with the words 'to my shame.' ...So then, to my shame, I'll admit I sort of liked MY BOOKY WOOK....I laughed out loud at least a dozen times." - Dwight Garner 03/19/2009

"Brand withholds nothing. He drinks. He smokes. He scores. He dope-fiends. And he regrets nothing except those incidents of depravity he may have forgotten." - Bill Scheft 03/29/2009
