Bill Cosby
Bill Cosby first became known to audiences through his standup comedy act, the success of which was a factor in his decision to drop out of Temple University in the early '60s. Soon after, he was a success both onstage and with several Grammy-winning comedy records, whose titles included I STARTED OUT AS A CHILD and WHY IS THERE AIR? Even at this time he was mining his childhood, with humorous stories about his friends and the humorous predicaments in which they found themselves. This was to be his hallmark throughout his career.
It was in television that Bill Cosby had his greatest success and greatest impact. He was cast as a co-star, with Robert Culp, on the drama I SPY in the mid-'60s. He won two Emmies for his portrayal of Alex Scott, a tennis trainer who was really a secret agent. He briefly played Chet Kincaid, a gym teacher and coach, on THE BILL COSBY SHOW. FAT ALBERT AND THE COSBY KIDS was an animated children's show which started on the Electric Company. Cosby provided the ideas and voices and was to write his doctoral dissertation on the educational value of the show.
In the '80s, Bill Cosby starred in his most memorable role-- that of Heathcliff Huxtable, obstetrician and patriarch of the family that became the most loved and watched in America at the time. Cosby maintained strict control over all aspects of the production of THE COSBY SHOW and it remained true to his vision and standards.
Following from this were a series of books (CHILDHOOD, FATHERHOOD), which, like his early routines, evoked the language of young people and, like his NBC series, evoked the love of parents for children and the need for discipline as well as understanding and forgiveness. Though shelved in the humor sections of bookstores, his books contained good advice on parenting.
In the '90s, Cosby starred in the short-lived YOU BET YOUR LIFE, based on the old Groucho Marx quiz show, and he later hosted KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS, an interview show that borrowed the old bit from Art Linkletter's HOUSE PARTY . More successful was a new COSBY, in which he played Hilton, a retired worker whose values and style were somewhat similar to those of Cliff Huxtable.
While Cosby's film career may not have been as overwhelmingly successful as other areas in which he worked, his performance in "Uptown Saturday Night" remains memorable. Videos of his stand-up comedy routines have sold well. Cosby has also been the spokesperson for several commercial products, most notably Kodak and Jell-O.
William H Cosby, Jr. received a Master's degree in 1972 and an Ed.D. in 1977 , both from the University of Massachussetts at Amherst, and education has been a primary interest for decades. He has also been a generous philanthropist. He and his wife, Camille O. Cosby, have given generously to many causes, notably Fisk College in Nashville and Spelman College, in Atlanta.
