| | | Love is here to stay... so is her family. Features: DVD, Pan and Scan (TV Format), Widescreen, Dolby Digital (5.1), Dolby Surround Sound, English, French, Spanish, Subtitled Toula Portokalos is a quiet, devoted daughter in a big, hectic, crazy Greek family. Working at her father's restaurant, "Dancing Zorba's," she hides behind a mop of mousy brown hair and thick, impenetrable glasses, keeping her family close and the world at a distance. But one day at the restaurant, she finds herself pouring coffee for a man so strikingly good-looking, that he inspires her to change her life - and the way she sees the world - forever. With a new hairdo, wardrobe, contact lenses, and most important of all, a whole new attitude, Toula steps out into the world a new woman, all ready to meet her man. Ian Miller is tall, handsome, but definitely not Greek. And whether he can handle Toula, her parents, her aunts, uncles, cousins and several centuries of Greek culture remains to be seen. But when you see the world through Toula's eyes, anything is possible!Running Time: 95 min.Format: DVD MOVIE "Two thumbs up!" Ebert & Roeper "A gleeful comedy." The New York Daily News "This isn't a feel good movie, it's a feel great movie." Good Morning America "A great story, full of life, laughter and zest." USA Today "Not only the best date movie of the year, it's also a -- dare I say it twice -- delightfully charming -- and totally American, I might add -- slice of comedic bliss." Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle "...a buoyant comedy..." Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle "...heartfelt and hilarious in ways you can't fake. It's a keeper." Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
 Editor's Note
Toula Portakalos (Nia Vardalos) feels trapped in her large Greek family, where women are expected to do only three things: "marry Greek men, have Greek babies, and feed everyone until the day they die." Rebelling against this fate, Toula quits the family restaurant, goes to college, fixes her hair, and falls in love with Ian (John Corbett), a guy who is way-too-good-to-be-true, and not Greek. This horrifies Toula's Greek culture-crazed father (Michael Constantine) and sets off a major culture clash between her loud, eccentric family (whose activities include roasting whole lambs on the front-yard barbecue spit) and Ian's subdued, overcivilized Anglo-Saxon parents.| |Based on Vardalos' own autobiographical one-woman play, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is that rare romantic comedy that has the courage to trust its simple, human story and not resort to overwrought Hollywood sentimentality and phony glamour (all the characters in the film look and act like real people). It's also filled with big, fat, crowd-pleasing laughs, making it a wedding most worth attending. Co-produced by Tom Hanks, the movie is set in Chicago, but was filmed in Toronto. The spirited cast includes Lainie Kazan and Andrea Martin (of SCTV fame) as Toula's mom and aunt.

5 of 5 A Winner! Wednesday, February 12, 2003 MemphisJan from Memphis, TN
This movie had the entire theatre audience rolling in the floor with laughter. I'm not sure if I was laughing at the great actors and thier wonderful lines, or if I was laughing at how much of myself and my family I saw in them. Probably both. It's the best "feel good" movie I've seen in years and can't wait to buy it! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Hilarious blast from the past!!!!! Tuesday, February 11, 2003 RecentViewer from Kokomo, IN
This movie has just about something most people can relate to, expecially if you're married to someone who didn't quite meet your parents' original expectations... though all ends well at the end. And looking back.... yeah, it's all really funny, just as depicted in this movie!!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 My Big Fat Greek Wedding The Best Comedy in Years Monday, February 10, 2003 Youla from Alameda, California
I was crying and laughing at the same time.It is hysterical. Everybody should watch it and buy the DVD. Great, clean, authentic humor; great actors and excellent acting. Especially for those of us who are Greek or have some sort of connection to the greek culture "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is of great value.
Kudos to Nia Vardalos for the script, acting and mostly for achieving such a success. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Greek Cinderella Story Wednesday, January 29, 2003 Marian from Lynchburg, VA
Saw this last night with my husband and we were very surprised how good it was. It was very funny and I'm sure everyone could relate to poor Toula. It's a Cinderella story with an ethnic twist. Even though it was a chick flick, my husband was laughing as hard as I was. Was this review helpful?

-- Sometimes a movie comes along that crosses the fence of color, religion or creed. This is one of those movies. I was never much aware of the greek background, but let me tell you, I gaurantee that everyone of some background or another can certainly relate to this well-written script about life, love and Family. In these times of uncertainty this film is really a great 2hr. diversion from everyday reality. I love the way it contains the innocense and humor that sometime lacks in today's society...BUY IT ..A+ Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Finally - The Best is Available! Monday, January 06, 2003 A Viewer from Pensacola, FL
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of the best films released in 2002 - and certainly the best comedy. Heart-warming and more than feel good - as one critic has said, feel GREAT! The acting, from an unknown cast, is superb. This film belongs in every DVD library. Was this review helpful?
4 of 4 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Romantic Comedy of the Year Saturday, December 21, 2002 A Viewer from Cincinnatti
This is by far one of the best comedies of the year. It is a quirky and funny movie that takes a lighthearted view at a couple from dating to getting married. It is also a little like a documentary that goes in depth about greek culture and stereotypes in general. It cuts across all lines of age, sex and race. The movie had almost no marketing and spread from word of mouth. It is in the top 50 movies of all time at the box office. I have already pre-ordered 2 DVD's! The sound track is also very good. It is an excellent movie inspired by Vardalos' own life and based on her one woman show. It is also financed by Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (who is Greek). Hanks has always acted in great romantic comedies. Now he and his wife have stumbled upon the Sleepless in Seattle of the new Millenium. This will be out in time to get your girlfriend it for Valentine's Day.

Wow. This is an amazing movie. It's funny, clean, it's a chick-flick that even a guy like me (and most NORMAL guys) can love! Nia is HOT and funny and this film is one you'll want to own. I cannot wait to see it again. If you are skeptical, remember, the movie opened in a few small theatres in May and due to word of mouth it became the highest grossing independent film of all time (stripping "The Blair Witch Project" of the title) and as of the end of November was consistently in the top six box office champs every week. It is a funny, beautifuly well made movie you are sure to enjoy! Make sure you RSVP to Big Fat Greek Wedding!!!

My BFGW was a documentary about my sisters wedding. Yes she married a Xeno and (a wonderful Xeno he is.) I never saw Vardalos's one woman show but must say the critics who trashed the film have no clue about how important Greek culture is to us (especially in this day and age). We were a one culture lobbying group because that was us on that screen (some of us more than others). If you don't believe me go to one of our church's Greek festivals. People immerse themselves in our culture because we are quirky like Vardalos and her extended family and we make excellent Baklava. Buy this video for your favorite valentine (it will last longer than roses). Now that the holidays are approaching, lamb anyone? Was this review helpful?
