 Editor's Note
Eighteenth Century France. When his parents are slaughtered by Cardinal Richelieu's man, Febre (Tim Roth), the young D'Artagnan is raised to be a musketeer by the loyal Planchet (Jean-Pierre Castaldi). Fourteen years later, Planchet takes the now-grown D'Artagnan (Justin Chambers) to Paris. There, they discover that the king's musketeers have been disbanded, that Richelieu (Stephen Rea) is plotting to undermine the monarchy, and that Febre is barely under control. So, the upstart D'Artagnan boldly sets out to reinvigorate the musketeers and save the monarchy--while taking revenge on Febre. In this version of Alexandre Dumas' much-filmed classic, director Peter Hyams and scriptwriter Gene Quintano switch focus from The Three Musketeers to D'Artagnan. Lavishly shot on location in France and Luxembourg by Hyams--acting as his own cinematographer--THE MUSKETEER aims for the robust approach and brutal humor of Richard Fleischer's THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER. Mixed in are fight sequences that utilize the skill of Hong Kong fight choreographer Xin Xin Xiong, who stages an exciting reprise of the ladder fight from Tsui Hark's ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA. Tim Roth is at his villainous best, and Catherine Deneuve enjoys herself as the queen--whether reigning at court or escaping through the sewers of Paris.

5 of 5 Musketeer with Real Action Thursday, June 08, 2006 ggrich2003 from Mount Pocono, PA
I thought this was a great movie, predictable, of course, but who doesn't know the story of the Musketeers by now. I enjoyed the character of the young Musketeer (D'Artagnan) was superb with charismatic and energetic swordsmanship, great athletic ability, good-looking young man. I enjoyed the movie and fight sequences and wished they had more story to tell. For action, I highly recommend it, if you were bored - then you are not an action flick fan - try Driving Miss Daisy - and enjoy with your box of kleenex. I would like to see more of the young actor in future action films. Good Job and Great Moves. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 Action led the movie - old theme dragged it down Tuesday, June 04, 2002 A Viewer from Sunnyvale, CA
The action sequences were good, but the storyline leads to a predictable place, and the creators did nothing original with a recycled storyline. To me this proves that even with Great action a movie can still be hanging. Was this review helpful?

Thought it was going to be good, but it was just plain boring. The very end did liven up a little, but other than that it was subpar. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Perfect if you want to have some fun without being Thursday, December 13, 2001 Brian C. from New Hampshire
Peter Hyams (director of Ah-nold's 'End of Days') brings us this new spin on the story of the Three Musketeers with Justin Chambers, Tim Roth, and Mena Suvari. Filled with stunts galore and some cool choreography, this film really doesn't have much else to it. If you're looking for a great update of the musketeer story, if you're looking for terrific acting, if you're looking for a film that perfectly follows Dumas' story without butchering it, if you're looking for pretty much anything OTHER than an action flick, then I suggest you go elsewhere.
But, if you are searching for a movie filled with some good stunt pieces, a plot that at least pretends to connect them together, and a cinematic score from David Arnold (of the 007 films), then I heartily recommend 'The Musketeer.' Was this review helpful?
