[Tomb of the Dragon Emperor] In the classic movie monster hierarchy, the cloth-clad Mummy really scrapes the bottom of the scare barrel. Aside from his close kinship with the zombie--sadly, this is one Egyptian artifact that avoids the mandatory skin eating--there's really nothing inherently spooky about a reanimated corpse with limited super(natural) powers. This is especially true of the mummy's latest big screen incarnation. In Rob Cohen's horrid The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the wrapped rascal is literally as menacing as an inert stone statue...A movie that tries this hard is bound to pull a good-time groin muscle or two, and when Sommers was directing the mayhem, one could at least make sense of the stunt work. Here, Cohen completely loses us in quick-cut action, his editing frequently ruining the rhythm of a fight. This is especially true when Li and Yeoh throw down. These amazing martial artists are known for their swordplay and physical grace. Now, the only evidence of said acumen resides in our memories of better Hong Kong movies past. When you long for the days of Arnold Vosloo and the endless machismo of Imhotep, you know something sucks. Oddly enough, at several points throughout the film, a character will take a moment and shriek "I hate mummies." Frankly, for the audience, the feeling is more than mutual. - Bill Gibron

[The Mummy Returns] The story for The Mummy Returns is a meager and muddled affair peppered with deus ex machina contrivances...Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz rekindle the cute chemistry that existed between their characters in The Mummy. Freddie Boath makes an effective addition to the cast, primarily because he's not as annoying as most movie kids. John Hannah is back as the fatuous Jonathan. Arnold Vosloo's Im-Ho-Tep is subtly diminished, perhaps because he now has to share the spotlight with two other villains. Patricia Velazquez has an expanded role here from the one she essayed in the first film. And the part of The Scorpion King doesn't challenge The Rock's thespian abilities - all he has to do is snarl and look tough - things he is familiar with from his day job...The Mummy Returns offers one surprise - an unexpectedly poignant dramatic moment in which we feel a surge of sympathy for one of the characters. Unfortunately, it's for one of the bad guys, which makes the ending a downer. Overall, the film probably offers what fans of The Mummy are expecting. The thinner, unnecessarily long storyline notwithstanding, this is essentially more of the same. [The Mummy] There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a "Congo" or an "Anaconda" comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. "The Mummy" is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it...None of this has anything to do with the great horror classic "The Mummy" (1932), which starred Boris Karloff in a strangely poignant performance as a long-dead priest who returns to life and falls in love with the modern reincarnation of the woman he died for. The 1932 movie contains no violence to speak of; there's hardly any action, indeed, and the chills come through slow realizations (hey, did that mummy move?)...Look, art this isn't. Great trash, it isn't. Good trash, it is. It's not quite up there with "Anaconda," but it's as much fun as "Congo" and "The Relic," and it's better than "Species." If those four titles are not intimately familiar to you, "The Mummy" might not be the place to start. - Roger Ebert
