Shirley MacLaine, Ricki Lake and Brendan Fraser star in this whirlwind romantic comedy about a girl caught between true love and mistaken identity. Through a twist of fate and a quirk of character, 18-year-old Connie Doyle is mistaken for the widow of a millionaire's son. Homeless, penniless and pregnant, Connie reluctantly accepts the generosity of the dead man's grieving mother, and finds herself falling in love with her late husband's twin brother. "MacLaine is at her all-time best as the unpredictable fairy godmother at the center of this comic Cinderella story. An absolute delight that's simply sensational." (Ron Brewington, American Urban Radio Networks)

"...simply sensational!"  Ron Brewington, American Urban Radio Networks
"...an utterly charming and off-beat romantic comedy."  Paul Wander, WBAI
"Fraser is appealing... Lake is well-cast.."  Christine James, Boxoffice Magazine
"Fabulous! Ricki Lake is a pefect Cinderella for the '90s."  Jeanne Wolf, Jeanne Wolf's Hollywood

Editor's Note

Connie Doyle (Ricki Lake) is pregnant and homeless after a fight with her deadbeat boyfriend (Loren Dean). A train wreck and a case of mistaken identity leads her to the opulent Massachusetts mansion of the Winterbourne family, lead by the stately Grace (Shirley MacLaine). Thought to be the wife of their son, who was killed in the crash, Connie wins the love of the grieving mother as well as the heart of the deceased man's twin brother (Brendan Fraser). Actor Richard Benjamin directs a script based on the novel I MARRIED A DEAD MAN by Cornell Woolrich, which also inspired the 1950 Barbara Stanwyck vehicle NO MAN OF HER OWN.

Plot Summary

Connie Doyle, a downtrodden, pregnant and abandoned young woman, sure could use a stroke of luck. Her big break occurs after a train wreck and a series of coincidences finds Connie in the hospital -- and at the center of a case of mistaken identity. | That's because the rich, snooty Winterbourne clan believes that Connie is the wife of young Hugh Winterbourne, who died in the crash. At first, Connie intends to straighten out the matter. However, she quickly realizes that continuing the charade will leave her and her infant son financially secure for the rest of their lives. | Can the down-to-earth Connie successfully play the role of being a snobby Winterbourne? To do so, she'll have to win over Hugh's brother Bill, who is highly suspicious of her true identity. And in the process, maybe they'll fall in love...

Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly
"...Lake is charming....The ending is, of course, happy..." 11/15/1996 p.84

Chicago Sun-Times
"...The movie is charming....It is light and stylish and good-hearted..." 04/19/1996 p.33

Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10
...What's best about the movie are the actors' human qualities. Shirley MacLaine has a few lines so sensible, I'm sure she must have edited them herself. Ricki Lake has a direct, blunt honesty that is appealing... Brendan Fraser is solid as the lover who sees through deception and out the other side. - Roger Ebert
