Connell is celebrated not only for the excellence of his writing, but for the variety both of his subject matter and of the literary genres in which he writes. He has always pursued his own interests, paying little attention to literary fashions. He has produced novels--including two in the form of prose poems--short stories, essays, and nonfiction works. His most celebrated novels are MRS. BRIDGE (1959) and MR. BRIDGE (1969), which were combined into a movie starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Since 1976, Connell wrote no conventional fiction, preferring instead to devote himself to essays and to historical works that blend fiction with nonfiction. |
