And, of course, there can be no criticism of the quality of the material here. Tucked between the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" and Lionel Richie's "All Night Long (All Night)" are more classics than one can comprehend, including the Jackson Five's "ABC," Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," and a batch of funk/disco gems such as Diana Ross's "Upside Down" and Rick James's "Give It To Me Baby." While younger fans familiar only with contemporary Motown might find the Supremes and the Contours too old-school, and old-timers might think the more recent material too slick and polished, the compilation ultimately stands as a testament to the vitality and longevity of one of the all-time great pop labels. Motown Number 1's, Vol. 2, like the other releases in Universal Music Distribution's Number 1's series, is filled to near capacity and comes in an attractive die-cut package, though it is chintzy -- as in primed for the recycling bin, or capable of being blown away by the tailwind of a closing door. Nothing can deny the value of the contents of the CD, which compiles 22 number one hits released on Motown from 1961 through 1995.
