Don't be fooled by the 22 mile reception from these radio's, or from any radio for that matter. The manual explains how they achieve such distance: from the top of a canyon down to the valley. We bought ours so that our son and his friends can go to the park and we could have one at home - less than half a mile. Works great for that even when someone is in the basement.
The radios are built well. We have dropped them several times and they still work.

I was misled by the 22 mile reception hype. In the city (and it says so in the instructions), the reception is less than a mile. Weather station is cool. Haven't tried it in the woods yet.
