| | No, it's not Godzilla with two turntables and a microphone. Rather, Monsters of Rap very matter-of-factly (and successfully) trots out the biggest rap hits of all time and lets them work their hook-laden magic. The producers of this compilation are more concerned with universality than with street credibility.
Thus, in addition to undeniable milestones such as Run-DMC's Aerosmith-inspired crossover hit "Walk This Way," and A Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario," we get the Pat Boone of rap Vanilla Ice ("Ice Ice Baby," what else?) and future matinee idol Will Smith as the Fresh Prince (the politely kid-friendly "Parents Just Don't Understand"). What really binds this collection together, though, is the inclusion of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back," Tone Loc's "Wild Thing," and other impossibly infectious songs that were consigned to the nostalgia bin by the arrival of harder, more confrontational gangsta styles.
