| | | Get Boned! Features: DVD It's rude! It's raunchy! It's totally outrageous! Brendan Fraser goes bananas in this comedy that breaks all the rules. After a car crash sends repressed cartoonist Stu Miley (Fraser) into a coma, he and the mischievous Monkeybone, his hilariously horny alter-ego, wake up in a wacked-out waystation for lost souls. When Monkeybone takes over Stu's body and escapes to wreak havoc on the real world, Stu has to find a way to stop him before his sister pulls the plug on reality forever! Saturday Night Live's Chris Kattan, Bridget Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg co-star in this inventive blend of live action and stop-motion animation, loaded with must-see, eye-popping F/X and some of the crudest, laugh-out-loud humor since South Park. "Unruly brilliance!" Entertainment Weekly "The wildest and funniest comedy in years!" Salon.com
 Editor's Note
MONKEYBONE, directed by Henry Selick (JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS), is a fantasy adventure that combines live action, stop motion, claymation miniatures, puppets, and computer imaging. Monkeybone is a cartoon character created by a successful comic book illustrator named Stu Miley (Brendan Fraser). (He wears a coat with the tag S. Miley, which is a good hint at the film's brand of pun-filled humor.) On the night that Stu is going to propose marriage to his girlfriend, Julie (Bridget Fonda), a freak accident throws him into a coma. Though he appears unconscious, lying in a hospital bed, he is actually having the strangest experience of his lifetime inside his own head. Trapped in a bizarre amusement park called Downtown, the land where nightmares are stored, Stu comes face to face with a living version of the small, mischievous Monkeybone (a stop-action paraffin sculpture voiced by John Turturro). The other inhabitants of Downtown are either part-humans like the seductive cat woman, Kitty (Rose McGowan) and the mysterious face of Death (Whoopi Goldberg), or beasts--Cyclops, Minotaurs, and Centaurs. While dodging obstacles from his own nightmares, Stu strives to break out of his coma and return to his true love. Little does he know, Monkeybone has plans of his own.

| | Professional Reviews | USA Today "...The far-out fantasy's originality is its draw....Kattan maintains his composure even while decomposing, a marvelous balancing act..." 02/23/2001 p.4ENew York Times "...It's a welcome antidote to the epidemic of witless [comedies]....Fraser has some splendid moments..." 02/23/2001 p.E10 Variety "...Frenetic....Wacky....MONKEYBONE is packed with comic talents..." 02/26/2001 p.39-49 Entertainment Weekly "...[An] admirably eccentric comedy....There's also unruly brilliance to this dark and funny story....Fraser walks upright, lithe and blithe, an actor in touch with his inner ape..." 03/09/2001 p.55 Box Office "...The kinetic Kattan bursts forth with some fantastic physical comedy..." 05/01/2001 p.61 Sight and Sound "...MONKEYBONE is often giddily hilarious....David Foley is delightful..." 04/01/2001 p.56-7 Los Angeles Times "MONKEYBONE is grand fantasy, in which Brendan Fraser and stylish design and energetic special effects play off one another for maximum fun....MONKEYBONE is well-aimed to hit you in the funny bone..." 02/23/2001 p.F2 The New York Times 8 of 10 ...the movie is booby-trapped with so many loud gags that some of its sneakier humor is nearly lost in the din... The movie's wildness should not be mistaken for the usual juvenile aggression... It's a movie about sublimation, neurosis and bad dreams. - A.O. Scott James Berardinelli's ReelViews 8 of 10 Not that long ago, it was a painstaking task to mix animated characters with real ones. But not any more - now, with digital techniques, the co-mingling can be almost seamless. By today's standards, the once cutting-edge approach of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" seems antiquated and clumsy. Entertainment Weekly 8 of 10 There's unwieldy mess -- but there's also unruly brilliance to this dark and funny story about the havoc that ensues when a man's uncensored Freudian id is allowed the run of the place. - Lisa Schwarzbaum
