Based on a story by famed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, Minority Report is an action-detective thriller set in Washington, D.C. in 2054, a murder-free city where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crime. Tom Cruise plays the head of the Pre-Crime Unit, who has been identified as the future killer of a man he hasn't even met, and has just 36 hours to discover who set him up. Tom Cruise gives his "most potent action performance" (David Ansen, Newsweek) in director Steven Spielberg's "sharpest, brawniest, most bustling entertainment since Raiders Of The Lost Ark (Richard Corliss, Time).

"Minority Report makes THE MATRIX look tame."  Leah Rozen, People
"The movie blew me away!... Highly recommended."  Peter Travers, Roling Stone
"...one of [Tom Cruise's] best performances yet."  Elvis Mitchell, New York Times
"Two thumbs way up!"  Ebert & Roeper
"...delivers the goods and then some."  Mike Clark, USA Today
"Cruise and Spielberg strike gold!"  Andrew Johnston, US Magazine

Editor's Note

The science-fiction thriller MINORITY REPORT, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is based on a short story by renowned writer Philip K. Dick. In the year 2054, in Washington, D.C., murder has been eliminated thanks to Precrime, a program that uses the visions of three psychics, called Precogs (an abbreviation for precognitive thinkers), to arrest and imprison would-be murderers before they have a chance to kill. Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, a Precrime enforcer who believes in the system for his own personal reasons--years back his young son was abducted, and he has dealt with the loss by becoming a high-strung Precrime officer. The director of Precrime (Max von Sydow) is eager to take the program national, and feels threatened by an ambitious federal agent (Colin Farrell) who is bent on finding a flaw in the system. When Anderton finds himself accused of the future murder of a man he's never met, his faith in Precrime is instantly shaken. He goes on the run, and is trailed by the relentless Precrime police. In the tradition of BLADE RUNNER (also based on a Dick story), MINORITY REPORT is a dark, brooding vision of the future. Spielberg expertly mixes thrilling chase and suspense sequences (the best of which involves Anderton being pursued by eye-scanning mechanical spiders) and stunning special effects with a challenging look at society's willingness to sacrifice privacy and the notion of free will for convenience and security. MINORITY REPORT is a thought-provoking and exciting film that ranks with Spielberg's best.

...Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is a triumph--a film that works on our minds and our emotions. It is a thriller and a human story, a movie of ideas that's also a whodunit. Here is a master filmmaker at the top of his form, working with a star, Tom Cruise, who generates complex human feelings even while playing an action hero. - Roger Ebert

5 of 5 Minority Report is Anything But Silent Thursday, October 24, 2002
Eric Reinken from Greenwich, CT

This Stephen Spielberg masterpiece takes place in a futuristic Washington, D.C. The seamless plot is based upon a short story by the legenday Philip K. Dick. (Blade Runner, Total Recall.) The protagonist, Chief Paul Anderton, deftly played by Tom Cruise, is the head of a controversial crime unit, "Precrime" which utilizes three psychics (precogs)to prevent crime before its commission. In the great Hitchc*ck films of the past, the protagonist finds himself in a position that no ordinary person could overcome. Similarly, Cruise learns that the precogs predict that Cruise himself will soon commit the murder of a man that he has never seen. Not unexpectantly, Cruise is pursued by the Precrime unit that he headed up. The audience begs Cruise to stay away. Despite his efforts, he ends up cofronting the man he is to murder just as the precogs predicted he would. Spielberg's vision of futuristic Washington D.C. in 2054 would have been enough to make this movie a great adventure film. Add a phenominal plot and great performances by Cruise, Max von Sydow and Danny Witwer and this movie is a must for the science fiction buff and and all DVD viewers.

5 of 5 "Report" with "Clones" Thursday, October 17, 2002
Nick from Chicago, Illinois
I expected only one movie to be great during the last Summer, instead I got three, "Clones," "Report," and "Spidey." Clones and Report, however, were superior to Spider-Man. If you are looking to own any two movies, one directed by Lucas, the other by Spielberg, these are most certainly the two you should choose.
