4 of 5 feature-packed Wednesday, January 21, 2009 Scott from Rural New York
This is a well-made little radio with lots of features. This is meant to be an emergency radio, so don't expect high quality sound for music.
Pros: Great reception, high quality, good value, many features, 3 different power options.
Cons: The crank handle doesn't sit securely enough when not in use. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Dependable Weather Information! Thursday, January 08, 2009 Mark Knauss from Rome, GA
Shortly after I gave this radio to my 7 year-old son as a Christmas present, severe weather hit our area and the radio became a dependable and valuable source of information. The reception was excellent (puts to shame one other weather radio that I own) and the handcrank mechanism gave us peace of mind - that we would continue to have information even if the power went out. The crank mechanism is rugged and has managed to perform flawlessly inspite of my boys' propensity to push things beyond the envelope. I wish someone would give me this radio for Christmas! 3 of 5 Great product, poor instructions. Monday, May 19, 2008 Barbara from Savannah, TN
This item was purchased for the sole purpose of "Weather Alert"feature. The instructions for this one important attribute were very brief and incomplete. I will have to wait until we are under a weather alert to figure out how to use the weather allert channels. The other components work well and well be very handy in case of a bad storm and subsequent power out. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 MIDLAND ER102 7-Channel Emergency Crank Radio Monday, April 21, 2008 A Customer from Seattle, Wa
Great product for $34.99 & free shipping.
I have one of these for the car, home, and work. I also have an Eton/Grundig FR400 which costs on average $60. They both work great, pull up good reception. The build quality on the Midland is much better (nobs and switches work smoother, and the radio feels more durable than the Eton (although the Eton claims water resistance).
The Eton also notes it can be run by the crank only, even if the included rechargable battery is not installed. I didn't not see this noted for the Midland.
The LCD on the Midland is a nice touch, and it also has an amber colored backlight. The only issue I could see occuring is if it were to be damaged. Since the Eton FR400 has an analog dial, you could still figure things out even if the window was broken.
The cell phone charging tips which come with the Midland did not include one for a mini-USB plug (very common for BlackBerry's, Smart Phones, newer Motorolas, etc). Eton does not include a package of free tips. You have to either mail back the included post card, or go to their site to request 1 free tip of your choosing. It's possible the tip for the Eton will also fit on the cord for the Midland, but I haven't tried.
For the cost, features, and usage, I'd recomend starting with the Midland, and get an Eton if you want to cover your bases. I've seen some reviews complain about the reception of Eton's, so it doesn't hurt to have 2 different brands to back each other up.
