5 of 5 Rebate for new PCs with XP home only!!!! Monday, January 20, 2003
Mike from Alamogordo, NM

WARNING: Don't buy this "upgrade" unless you have: - purchased a new PC from Buy.com in the last 30 days, and - the new PC had XP Home pre-installed at Buy.com If you think this is a way to get W2K upgraded to XP Pro for a hundred bucks, forget it. XP would be a good buy at $49. $249? Forget about it! Buy.Com really should make this rebate restriction clearly evident on the web page... Read the rebate coupon carefully!

3 of 5 It's better than Win2K, but... Monday, November 11, 2002
A Customer from Greenbelt, MD
...it's still not Mac OS X. I totally disagree with the other review that said it's better than Mac OS, though it is a marked improvement in terms of interface over Windows 2000. That said, this is what Windows 2000 should have been. I am not sure it's worth the upgrade price for the professional version. I think that in the long haul, it may be smarter for Windows 2000 users to wait for the "next big thing" from Redmond before plunking down cash for this upgrade. Most major applications work great on Windows 2000. That said, XP is faster and has the quickest boot time of any version of Windows in my home (98, 2000, etc...). Hibernation/Sleep mode acutally works. :-)

5 of 5 Networking XP-Professional Tuesday, October 29, 2002
Bob L. from Holland, MI
Hello to all of you out there who don't get enough aggravation or stress during a " normal day ". I found that installing XP-Pro to be quite rewarding, all of the searching for the driver disks for each component is over ( ya hoo ) it's about time! ! ! I do wish that the networking documentation were accurate, I found that configuring ( the network settings )can be quite frustrating if you are not exposed to the unwritten steps required. After the networking portion is completed, it seems to run far better than any previous version I have ever had the pleasure to work with, lock-ups, and the "this computer has performed an illegal opperation ", or the un-wanted restarting of the computer (with no warning) while you are deeply involved in a project seem to be over. Over all I have appreciated the XP-level (home or professional) very well. On a last note for those users out there who work at home and at the office, the two packages are quite a bit different, and don't even think about taking your laptop from home (with XP-Home version) to the office and connect to the network. I will be comverting all of the office computers to XP-Pro, as the situation arises.

4 of 5 Tips before buying Monday, April 08, 2002
A Customer from Texas
A few of things to remember about XP. 1. Microsoft left off dual-monitor support on the Home Edition, which is a shame since monitor prices are so cheap these days. You have to get the Pro addition to gain this luxury. Why? Good question, Windows 98 supported dual monitor fine. 2. As usual, Microsoft invades your privacy. The system will not let you un-install Windows Messenger unless you modify the registry. Amazingly, if you delete the actual system file for Windows Messenger, it will re-create itself. Uninstalling it isn't difficult to do if you do a search on the web, but you will never find this out with Microsoft's "help" program. 3. Don't install this unless you have a fairly new machine. I really like this OS, but it does tax the system quite a bit. You really need at least 256 MB or memory for it to work well. It practically gobbles memory. I am amazed that over 200 MB of memory can be consumed by doing absolutely nothing in Windows XP. 4. Overall, I really like XP. I would recommend it for all new and fairly-new machines. I just wish Microsoft would take out product activation (annoying) and quit forcing Messenger on everybody.

5 of 5 Window XP Pro Tuesday, November 20, 2001
kirkgood from White Lake Michigan
Installed on a Athalon 1.4 machine. Installation was smooth, system came right up. XP is relentless about registering on line. I finally gave and let it do it. Now it wants to download updates all the time and upload problem occurances. I had a Canon multifunction printer. Canon is not writing new drivers for XP for all of it's product out there. I had to buy a new printer or be without for the time it takes for someone to write a new driver. I can't be without a printer. The home network (peer to peer) works well. The new locations for all of the stuff you are used to looking for in 98 or NT will set up back a notch but you'll get used to it. It seems to tolerate complex hardware configuration pretty well. One thing, if you have a hardware conflict you will have to fix it. XP does not like unresolved issues and it wants to call up the mother ship and tell everytime there is a conflict. I mourn the loss of access to the hardware. As newer versions of Windows have hit the market they endevor to layer up the machine and XP is the next step. Your access to the hardware is numb through layers deep interfaces. The plug and play interrogation is total now. At least the ba** with the paper clip doesn't show up anymore with suggestions. You will notice that the boot up sequence is faster (thankyou) and that XP is not as easily locked up. The task manager is deeper and allows a look at running resident terminants. XP has a slick look and feel. Mac users will still hate it but it is better that MAC OS if 5 generation late.

5 of 5 Best Windows Ever Saturday, November 10, 2001
A Customer from Vancouver, WA
I have been using Windows XP Professional RC-2 for over 60 days on both my home and work PC, and I have found it to live up to its advance billing. The overall stability is rock-solid and all my old programs work perfectly with the Program Compatibility Wizard. For anyone using Windows 95/98 ME or NT 4.0, Windows XP Pro is a must-have upgrade. If you are using Windows 2000, it is still worthwhile, but not necessarily a “must.”
