4 of 5 Works for me Thursday, January 29, 2009 A Customer from Strasburg, PA
The hard drive is a little slower than your normal 7200rpm drive, but still serves the purpose of backing up documents and media to a portable drive. I bought this hard drive to increase the storage space on a laptop without having to carry a large 3.5" drive along with its power cord. The included software for backup is your average free software, nothing special. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase. Also, I wish they wouldn't waste plastic just so the customer can have the option of changing the color of the case. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great External Hard Drive Saturday, January 17, 2009 Justice from New Jersey
I purchased this external hard drive because I was looking for a solution to back-up my data in the case my PC hard drives ever failed, and came to find this one. I am very happy that I have made the decision to purchase this item - one of the main reasons was because of its reputable manufacturer, Memorex.
This external hard drive works perfectly and comes with software that allows you to back-up files quickly and easily.
The hard drive's data transfer rate is pretty fast, I am able to transfer 2GB-3GB of data within a very reasonable amount of time.
One of the best features about this item is the size. It's super portable, seems very durable, and comes with 3 different-colored plates so you can stylize this portable memory device, which is pretty cool.
The unit also has a button on it that - once plugged in via USB to your PC or laptop - that when pressed, starts up the back-up program so you can begin backing up files.
This is definitely a solid item with good back-up software. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an easy-to-use, fast, efficient, and stylish external hard drive. :] Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 I thought this would be a good product... Friday, November 28, 2008 J.M from Philadelphia, PA
After about 4 months of useage, I started to have problems with my drive, on VERIOUS computers the drive stopped detecting and stopped working. The blue light on the top would come on but the green one on the side did not. I can use it any more and now its a hunk of junk and a waste of money. I am extreme PO'ed... Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fantastic little portable hard drive! Monday, July 07, 2008 Gil Miller from Florida
I used this little dynamo right out of the box (actually blister-pack), plugged it into one computer (Windows XP) with the USB plug and dragged some Old Time Radio shows in. I then carried into another room and transferred them to a laptop (Windows Vista). Since then I've used it to carry data from my studio computers (2) to my house computers(3)without a hitch. It's great not having to use a wall wart. I haven't needed to use the power plug (included) yet. Terrific buy! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Perfect Monday, July 07, 2008 Josh from Ocala, FL
This portable hard-drive is absolutely perfect for me. It's exactly what I was looking for. Very good capacity (120GB), small and compact, simple and trouble free operation, quite, and attractive casing. The speed of data transfer is very acceptable. You can transfer a ton of data in a very reasonable amount of time.
It only needs one of the provided cables to function perfectly on both of my laptops, and my desktop. All that, and a very reasonable price. I would recommend it to anyone. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 AWESOME Sunday, July 06, 2008 A Customer from COEUR D'ALENE, IDAHO
This thing is perfect. Self sustaining power through the USB and it's compatible with what I use. Granted I use mostly PC style computers. I haven't tried it with any Apple comps yet. Great buy! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 great product Saturday, July 05, 2008 A Customer from San Francisco, CA
PRO: portable; getting power from USB is a great plus; quiet; not getting hot.
CON: bigger than some other 2.5 in enclosures. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Couldn't be happier Wednesday, July 02, 2008 Blaine from Woburn, Mass
I couldn't be happier with this purchase. You couldn't beat the price I paid from ANTonline. I wanted something that I that I didn't have to load software with. I'm just tired of every company wanting you to use their software. I didn't need to load the software it connected just fine. I didn't need to connect the second USB for power (and my computer is old!.) Everything is working just fine so once again.... I completely satisfied with my purchase of this external hard drive. 4 of 5 Excellent product Thursday, June 19, 2008 zeitgeist from New York, NY
I needed a small, portable external hard drive and that is what I got. It is fast, efficient, has a good capacity for backing up and storing files and is easy with its plug-and-play. I am using it on a mac and so far it is working smoothly. The only reason I gave it a 4 overall is it does have that second USB plug for extra power. Even though it seems to be fine with power from the one USB my mac doesn't recognize the drive until I plug in the second USB to give it even more power. I have a USB splitter so it is not a hassle for extra plug space, but it would be easier if I only had to plug it in one place nonetheless. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 OK as a backup drive Sunday, June 15, 2008 Mark from Castle Pines North, CO
The product is a great price for some selective backup. The backup software wasn't up to the task. We ended up using a drag & drop method to back up and we'll do it manually in the future. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 external HD good value, bad cord Sunday, June 15, 2008 backup fiend from Seattle, WA
The external hard drive is easy to use and works well. My only complaint is that the cord that was sent with it appears to be a little lose, as my computer will randomly tell me that the USB has been ejected when it has been sitting on my desk and I have not even touched it. 5 of 5 Small enough to fit in a bag without a bulge Saturday, June 14, 2008 Jon from Cleveland, Ohio
I was surprised at how small this hard drive actually is. It's small enough to fit in a bag (with the cord wrapped around it) and not take up any space. I use it with my MacBook Pro to synch my iTunes music. I don't keep any iTunes music on my internal hard drive - it's all on this external, thus freeing up valuable hard drive space. And since its so small, I carry it with me everywhere. Was this review helpful?

I bought this drive for the price and size but when I ran a chkdsk on the drive, it came back with bad sectors. Another downside to this drive is that it comes with 2 non-standard usb connectors one for power from the usb hub. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good Size, OK performance, Great Value Sunday, June 08, 2008 Paul from Robbinsdale, MN
Overall this was a great buy for me. I needed something small (fits in my pocket) and inexpensive; this fit the bill. The one thing that would be nice is a true one cord system. If you have a high power USB port in will work with one cord only however I have had to plug in the second power cord numerous times to allow the drive to have enough power to show up in my system. The write and read times are pretty good for an inexpensive drive. This was a good purchase. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great drive for the price Sunday, June 08, 2008 John from Vestal, NY
Buy.com comes through again with a great product at a real good price. Drive is very good and I am using it to back my PC files so I don't have an issue recovering them. I can take it with me and use the data on another PC. I recommend it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Little Drive Wednesday, June 04, 2008 A Customer from Spartanburg, SC
I've had no problem with this drive. The compact size is perfect for carrying in by briefcase or purse. I used it straight out of the box, and don't have to use the 2nd USB power cable. I didn't install the software - just drag & drop my files. I got it for the purpose of moving my iTunes Library to a portable drive, and it works great in this capacity. I like the fact that it has an indicator light to identify USB 1.1 vs 2.0 ports. And the price at Buy.Com made it an extra value. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 So far so good.. Tuesday, June 03, 2008 A Customer from Walker, MN
This is a great little drive so far. Very light and portable for a 120GB drive. Does require the two included usb cables on the older computers I use. Excellent value. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Deal! Tuesday, June 03, 2008 doc738 from Georgetown, Texas
My only "complaint" was the plastic packaging which was hard to remove. The unit is very portable, sharp looking and easy to use immediately - only a simple USB cord (provided). Files transfer just fine using XP desktop without loading software. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works fine, cheap Tuesday, June 03, 2008 A Customer from SB,CA
The product has good performance, looks nice. The only drawback would be that it needs two USB ports (actually sometimes it works even when only a data cable is connected, but in that case sometimes makes weird noises). If you have two spare USB ports, look no further - by this! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good drive. Great price. Tuesday, June 03, 2008 A Customer from charlotte, nc

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Small and quiet Monday, June 02, 2008 A Customer from GA
I used the drive on a Solaris platform to store my photo album. I zeroed out the first 10000 blocks or so of the drive with dd (FAT is a pain to use under Solaris) and then put a new file system on it with newfs. Newfs could determine the drive parameters and put a UFS file system without any problems. The drive is virtually noiseless. The drive has a power input and, although it came with a power cable, the drive itself can be powered through only the USB cable. BTW, the power cable draws its power from a USB source, so if you would power the drive through with the power cord, you would probably need to use 2 USB ports (or use a USB power adapter). Anyway, as it turns out, you don't need the power cable at all. Was this review helpful?

I purchased this drive to play my music library in my new car that has a USB port for MP3 players.
I recently purchased a similar Seagate drive (same capacity, interface, form factor) and the Memorex drive has more features at a lower price. The Memorex drive arrives formatted for FAT32 instead of NTFS. This allows it to be used for MP3s and can be directly connected to most of the newer car USB ports. The Seagate drive was formatted NTFS and I had to find a formatter to change it to FAT32 because the car stereo wouldn't recognize the NTFS drive format. Both drives work with only the single USB connection although both have a second USB input for additional power.
The memorex drive includes an LED that indicates whether it is connected on a faster USB2.0 port versus a USB1.1. The seagate doesn't have this feature. The memorex also seems to run a little cooler. Pretty important when it lives in the console of my car most of the time. They both have transfer rates that are the same.
The drive cost 40% less than the seagate for the same capacity, form factor and interface !! Thanks BUY.com for a great deal. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great price for a SATA drive. Monday, June 02, 2008 Paul from NYC, NY
Excelent product for the price, I bought three of these drives and I like the idea of changing the color of the case to represent different applications. I opened one of the case and found a Toshiba SATA drive MK1234GSX inside. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great product!! Monday, June 02, 2008 A Customer from Salem, OR
What can I say...lightweight, fast, convenient, runs on USB only without the included 2nd USB cable, works with iTunes to store music files for syncing with iPod...great product at great price! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Really easy to use... Monday, June 02, 2008 Debbie B from Nutley, NJ
I was concerned about losing my music and pictures so I bought this external hard drive. It was really easy to use. Just plug into USB port and start copying. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 awesome portable drive Monday, June 02, 2008 A Customer from Naperville, IL
This is probably one of the best storate drives that I have owned for the price. It does everything you want a large portable drive to do at a low price and a very small physical size.
The only negative thing that I found was that some USB ports do not have enough power to use this drive. (some macs, some pc ext. ports).
I would buy this any day if I had the chance to do so again. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Works Great Monday, June 02, 2008 Smeeky from Wilderness, VA
On my laptop both USB cables are required but only one on my Dell desktop. Other than that one issue the drive works as advertised. I'm using it to store DVD movies so my grandkids can watch movies while we travel. No more fumbling with a variety of disks! While I haven't filled the drive yet I'm sure I will be able to get more than enough to fill a two week trip without watch the same movie twice. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fast little drive Wednesday, May 28, 2008 Bires from Las Vegas, NV
I have to use both USBs (power+data) in every computer I've tried, but the drive is a great little performer. It's totally quiet, doesn't produce much heat, and moves files with alacrity. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Great deal with a minor disadvantage Sunday, May 25, 2008 TM from Greenville, SC
Great product overall. Small, easy to handle, and works pretty well. The software (I use a Mac) was not as intuitive as I would like, so I'm backing up my files (my primary use for the drive) by just dragging the files that I want to the drive.
Also, on my Macbook, the unit does not draw enough power through the data USB connection to run the unit, so I have to run both the data and power USB cable (both included) to use the unit. A bit of a drawback, although not enough to complain too much about given the value of the unit overall. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 All IS GOOD Wednesday, May 21, 2008 A Customer from THE ATL

5 of 5 Great, Simple, and CHEAP! Wednesday, May 21, 2008 A Customer from Tallahassee, FL
I was a little worried about this drive after reading some of the reviews -- also Memorex isn't known for high quality electronics, but I'm pleasantly surprised by this hard drive. I only got this because my last external hard drive died and I needed something new, I should have bought a couple of these.
I've got a Macbook Pro and it works just fine without needing more power. In fact, it integrates well with time machine for backups, so I don't need the included Memorex software. All in all it functions well, no problems at all. The device feels rugged, but I wouldn't recommend dropping it.
Here are my gripes:
The power cable for the device is a little weird. One end is a standard DC jack, and the other is a USB cable, which requires you to use another usb port. I haven't needed it, so it doesn't really bother me. Having to bring 2 cables along, just in case, may be a pain.
The removable faceplates are a pain! It feels like you're going to break something when you change out the colors. I thought I'd keep it silver, but the black faceplates make it look much nicer.
Overall:
For the really low price Buy.com is selling this for, you can't not grab one...or two. They're really small, handy and reliable. Was this review helpful?

Just plug it in and drag and drop. no set up... no problems. Couldn't be easier. I highly recommend this as a back-up storage device or portable hard drive. Maybe it's me, but I can't get this to work. I loaded the enclosed software and followed the instructions. The box lights and makes noise and the screen says things are being backed up. When I tried to restore the info, it said that there was no information to be be restored. I have tried several more times, all with the same result. If it would only do what it was stated to do, the above ratings would all be 5's. Was this review helpful?

4 of 4 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Useful tool Saturday, March 22, 2008 R H Verdier from Oriental, NC
This external HD was exactly as described; arrived on time; and was a fair price. It worked straight out of the box. Has more capacity than my laptop, so I can use it for backup. The first mission was to unload data from a desktop I was giving to my son; it di this job well. I did not install the software - the computers I use it with have Windows XP, Vista or Mac Tiger and it works with all of them using the tools in the computer - they all see the traveldrive as just another hard drive. Size is okay, not big but not small either. Only serious complaint: it runs on the power from the USB port of the computer it is attached to. In the case of my laptops, this means two cables and two USB ports tied up. Plus it runs down the battery faster on the portable computers. Not a real big problem, but an internal, rechargable battery would be nice. Of course, that would run up the cost.. Because of the power complication I use this only for moving large amounts of data. Anything less than 8 GB can be copied/moved easily on a relatively inexpensive flash drive. Was this review helpful?

The hard drive works fine. It has some sort of one touch backup which I have not bothered to read about or use. The extra faceplates are not needed and I do not use them. The only problem is that it needs two USB cables for my laptop. One is for required to obtain enough power and the other is needed for data transfer. This makes it a bit bulky. I would have preferred some sort of "pull-out" cable to connect. Evidently some computers do not need the second cable but I have not checked others. The price was right. Was this review helpful?
