Jim Carrey delivers a hysterical performance in this "fall-down, flat-out, irresistibly deranged movie" (Rolling Stone).

Rhode Island state trooper Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey) proves that nice guys finish first after marrying the prettiest gal in town. But when she leaves him for another man, Charlie develops a split personality and his outrageous opposite, Hank, is born! Hank's got a filthy mouth, a bad attitude and a short fuse. When Charlie falls crazy in love with the beautiful but wanted Irene, he must wage war--with himself--for the confused Irene's affections.

"...[The Farrelly Brothers] extend the string of heartfelt, stomach-turning comedies that began with Kingpin..."  A.O. Scott, The New York Times
"Hilarious..."  Los Angeles Daily News
"A hell-raising piece of comedy heaven."  Rolling Stone
"This movie is not for the faint-hearted."  Sian Kiwan, BBC Film Review
"...laughs roll out by the handfuls..."  Variety

Editor's Note

In the Farrelly Brothers' ME, MYSELF & IRENE, Jim Carrey plays Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island State Trooper who develops a split personality disorder after his wife leaves him for an African-American midget genius. Due to years of denial and repression while raising triplet sons left behind by his wife and her lover, Charlie finally gets fed up with people taking advantage of his meek nature and snaps, taking on a lewd, aggressive second personality named Hank. Soon afterwards, Charlie is assigned by the police department to protect a woman named Irene (Renée Zellweger), who's being followed by some shady characters who want her dead. As the pair attempt to outwit their pursuers, the kind-hearted Charlie begins to fall for Irene, while battling his sleazy alter ego, Hank.

Back in full comedy mode after his more dramatic roles in THE TRUMAN SHOW and MAN ON THE MOON, Carrey once again displays his outlandish brand of physical humor. As with any Farrelly Brothers film, there are plenty of grossly funny yet good-natured moments. (In fact, Charlie's loving relationship with his three brilliant half-African-American sons is one of the film's best and funniest subplots.) Above all, it is the way that Carrey juggles the extreme personalities of Charlie and Hank--basically waging war against himself--that shows why he is one of Hollywood's best comedic actors.

ReelViews 8 of 10
[The Farrelly Brothers] 1998 hit, There's Something About Mary, will forever be known for breaking the semen barrier in mainstream movies. It also raised the vulgar comedy to new heights of profitability, proving that envelope-pushing will attract more viewers than it will drive away. Since There's Something About Mary, it seems that each new R-rated comedy has tried to exceed the gross-out quotient of its predecessors...leading to a cavalcade of jokes about subjects that Mel Brooks wouldn't have touched in his heyday. However, for their latest, Me, Myself & Irene, the Farrellys have not joined the one-upsmanship game. Sure, this movie contains a fair amount of risque material and more than a few jokes for people with a warped sense of humor, but, if anything, it is more tame than There's Something About Mary. Me, Myself & Irene sacrifices punch lines in order to develop characters and relationships. - James Berardinelli

DVD Verdict 9 of 10
No one who knows the Farrelly brothers walks into one of their films expecting an erudite, sensitive portrayal of high drama. You know that it will be comedy in which bad taste is perhaps the point. Me, Myself and Irene is the latest Farrelly romp starring Jim Carrey...The Farrelly brothers have done some great work in the past, including Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary. This film isn't up to the quality of any of those. I still laughed enough to give a marginal recommendation, but I still think it is a step backwards...The plot on the other hand was anything but lazy. This story was so convoluted that you simply had to ignore most of it and just accept that the main characters were on the run. Simplifying the story would have been welcome, considering this was mostly the Jim Carrey show anyway. - Norman Short
