 Editor's Note
A surprise hit comedy, Paul and Chris Weitz's AMERICAN PIE follows four high school friends--Jim (Jason Biggs), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), and Oz (Chris Klein)--through their sexually frustrated senior year. Boy-next-door Kevin hopes to finally lose his virginity to his bubbly girlfriend, Vicky (Tara Reid), while football player Oz begins an unlikely relationship with quiet chorus girl Heather (Mena Suvari). Finch struggles to maintain his cool air of witty detachment, while the neurotic Jim, most famously, has an intimate moment with apple pastry--and, eventually, sexy exchange student Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth). This hysterical yet sensitive movie also features memorable characters such as the ever-wise Jessica (Natasha Lyonne), the imbecilic Stifler (Seann William Scott), the dorky Sherminator (Chris Owen), the flute-playing Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and Jim's hilariously nerdy dad (Eugene Levy).

| | Professional Reviews | Rolling Stone "...A prime slice of raunchy fun..." 7/8-22/1999 p.163-4New York Times "...A high school sex farce that knows exactly how far to push the envelope..." 07/09/1999 p.E14 Box Office "...As warm and sweet as its title....An unexpected summer date movie..." 09/01/1999 p.154 Total Film "[I]t's the best teen sex-com since ANIMAL HOUSE, serving up one outrageous set-piece after another..." 02/01/2004 p.119 ReelViews 8 of 10 ...while [American Pie] is rude, crude, and lewd, it doesn't break any new ground. Its least palatable moment (involving a beer-and-bodily fluid cocktail) is no worse than a similar instance from the PG-13 Austin Powers sequel...The main difference between American Pie and most of the other teen-themed comedies flooding theaters these days is the take-no-prisoners edge. This film isn't going for "cute." It's not trying to earn a PG-13 for maximum exposure to the under-17 crowd. It takes risks; they don't always work, but, when they do, there's a payoff. And, aside from Election (and perhaps the inept Cruel Intentions), no recent movie set in a high school has been this frank about sex...For those who think the moral level of Hollywood pictures is in a steep decline, American Pie provides evidence to support the theory. For just about everyone else, it's a guilty (or, in some cases, a not-so-guilty) pleasure. - James Berardinelli Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10 "American Pie" is a comedy about four high school senior boys who make a pact to lose their virginity before the end of the school year. This alone makes it almost touchingly old-fashioned; I did not know Hollywood still permitted high school seniors to be virgins...The film is in the tradition of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "National Lampoon's Animal House," and all the more recent teen sex comedies. It is not inspired, but it's cheerful and hard-working and sometimes funny, and--here's the important thing--it's not mean. Its characters are sort of sweet and lovable. As I swim through the summer tide of vulgarity, I find that's what I'm looking for: Movies that at least feel affection for their characters. Raunchy is OK. Cruel is not. - Roger Ebert
