I wanted a backup drive to store my pictures and albums. Somehow my iTunes folder has over 13,000 songs.
Setup was fairly easy; I like the idea of an automatic backup; I chose every Monday evening.
I'm on a home networked computer and it couldn't display my "shared folders". This is kind of a pain, because I wanted to also automatically back up the "MyDocuments" folder. Now I just manually copy it each week, but I wish it were also automatic.

As usual my product arrived promptly from Buy.com and in good condition. The drive itself has been functioning flawlessly since I installed it several weeks ago. The was one hiccup however. About 10 days after installation my PC would totally lock up with no apparent rhyme or reason. I did the usual: virus scan, Malware and Spyware scans to no avail. Restored from an image to the first lock up, no help. Finally, almost as an afterthought I uninstalled the back up software that Maxtor had provided with the unit; Voila, problem solved.

One touch works great on XP devices. Love it. Hooked it up to my Vista laptop, works great as well. Got a new Vista Gaming machine. One touch will not install - needs driver(?). There are no drivers available. Can only use on 3 of my 4 devices Was this review helpful?

It's just that I have experienced none as of yet. Large capacity, easy to install and use. Mines very quite. The data transfer rate is good, the pre-installed backup software works flawlessly and it's fast. I installed two data recovery programs on it in a few minutes. I cloned both my XP Pro and Vista Home Premium Drives to it easily. The USB cable on mine is 5' long so no complaints here either. The price is good and the delivery took 3 days. Ordered on Monday, received it on Thursday. Must be, Seagate has made some improvements to their Maxtor external drives. Making a choice on which to buy was harder then anything I've done with it since it arrived. I recommend it without reservation. Was this review helpful?

Not much to say. Bought this for a customer, good form factor and simple to use. Set her up with the one click backup(Setup required). Plug the USB cable into computer wait for bar on drive to light up and push it.The backup software has good features although I only used it for her My Documents backup. I set up Acronis backup utility for backing up the whole computer drive(Use it all the time, very robust program). Was this review helpful?

This Maxtor drive comes ready to go out of the box. It has one drive letter and does not require formatting. The Iomega drives I have required formatting to NTFS from FAT 32. The Western Digital drive does not turn on automatically when the computer is powered up (the power button on the drive must be pushed).
This 500 GB Maxtor eliminates all those headaches. I have 2 other Maxtor drives that have been in use for about 5 years and still work fine. I will buy Maxtor Drives from now on. Great Drive at a Great Price. I recommend them to everyone. Was this review helpful?

I bought two of these last Thanksgiving, and hadn't really used them much until now. One of the drives recently started corrupting files, the program I was using told me to run chkdsk, and now all of my files are gone. They are still taking up disk space, but are not in the folders.
If this happens, do not run chkdsk, it makes recovery more difficult. Seagate/Maxtor just says that the we should backup our information, and they will accept the drive in return. There are free recovery tools, so don't pay for Seagates recovery tools at $130.
Apparently, people have posted that the drive inside isn't the problem, it is the enclosure that has trouble. Just be careful and if something goes wrong or fishy, immediately try to recover the data to another drive (this goes for all hard drives). I didn't expect this drive to have trouble as soon as it did. Was this review helpful?

I just bought this drive, and I am very impressed with it. I needed to get all of my music off of my laptop, it was eating up too much of the internal hard drive. I put all of my music on the Maxtor, as did my wife. Now we can share and listen to both sets of music whenever we want.
The drive is quiet and very fast in transferring data.
