4 of 5 Decent deal, although drive died after 4 months 12/8/2008
Matt D. from Waxhaw, NC
Good price and excellent service as always from Buy.com. Returned from vacation to find drive had shut down and would not power up. I found that a Seagate drive provided by my employer had the same power supply so I tried swapping it but the drive was dead. Hassle free return through the Maxtor web site and had a refurbed drive within 10 days, although there is no real peace of mind in a backup drive that stops working in less than 4 months.

5 of 5 Rock Solid 10/14/2008
from Brunswick Maryland
Plug and Play Mac or PC. Very reliable and quiet. My only complaint is that the One Touch Back Up feature only works on XP and above. I have 2000. But drive itself is great.

5 of 5 Great for Backing up Laptop 10/8/2008
from Brunswick Maryland
Had it for about 6 months now. No problems. True Plug n Play. I use it to back up my Thinkpad as well as to keep all my data files. It works flawlessly, quiet and no heat buildup. Great product for the money. Only issue I had was with the one-touch back-up feature. It requires XP or later and I'm still in the dark ages and run 2000.

4.7 of 5 good value 5/22/2008
jimmy from austin, tx
works great for what it is. the back-up software seems great, too. i haven't restored, yet so i'm not sure about that. also once you start as a back-up for a PC, you can't also back-up a mac. if 250G is enough; this is a great choice. note when buy the smaller 250G you *do not* get firewire; usb 2.0 only.

4.3 of 5 250 GB of space means less headeache 5/20/2008
from dearborn, mi
250 GB of space means less headeache while backing up. One click and the back up starts taking place. The back up is not fast, which is a drawback of the product. For the price, and the coupon i had ,the product deserves the price, but if you can afford to buy a USB pocket hard disk, with no power supply, go for it. This hard disk is huge, and some how is heavy, it is not meant to be portable by no means.

5 of 5 Great Hard Drive! 5/18/2008
from NJ
I was looking for an external hard drive, and I came across this one. This is the best one that I found. It was the least expensive one for this amount of storage. Also, Buy.com had the best price out of other stores including Circuit City.

5 of 5 Excellent 5/10/2008
Eleni from New York
I absolutely love this external hard drive. I mainly use it for music storage so that it wont take up space on my laptop, and I have not had one problem. The only con I can think of is that it is not as compact as other external drive's. However, the price is unbeatable. If you will not be traveling with this, then I would highly recommend it.

5 of 5 Good product 4/20/2008
Rm506 from Atlanta, GA
This external hard drive does exactly what I need it to do. And, it's easy to use. Good value as well. It would be nice if it had a power switch but it's not that hard to plug it in when needed.

5 of 5 Ease of use on different operating systems. 4/13/2008
from North Smithfield, RI
It worked so well on my Windows XP operating system, I bought another for my daughter's Apple Macbook. Super easy installation and operation on both systems. It's a LOT cheaper than paying a technician later to retrieve data from a crashed hard drive.

4.7 of 5 Perfect for regular, simple backups with little fu 4/13/2008
Jerry Bull -- jerrybull from Fairview TN
As our files of personal Word & Excel docs, printable music scores, and mp3 collection have grown sizable (40G or so), we decided it was high time to add an external drive to contain backups should the worst occur and we lose our regular internal hard drive somehow. We ordered the Maxtor One Touch 4 for its very reasonable cost per gig and simple operation. It installed easily and quickly, flawless out of the box. Perhaps the process by which you define your "regularly" scheduled backup(s) could be a bit more intuitive (or what little "manual" enclosed on the CD there is, be a bit more illustrative), but we soon figured out both how to do one-time saves of relatively large but mostly static folders, as well as how to put the more dynamic folders we wanted to backup regularly to a daily or weekly schedule. What's nice is that only files that have changed since the prior backup are actually transferred, so there is some modicum of intelligence and efficiency with the process. Incidentally, the transfer rate at USB2 speeds is plenty fast enough, even if you're sitting there "watching", which usually we're not. The actual "one touch" feature is merely a manual instigation of your regular backup prescription, but that might be useful if you just concluded several hours of work, and wanted a backup right now instead of (say) several days later at the regular time. A "backup log" is written to a notepad file each time a backup is executed, specifying how many files were backed up, at what date and time, and what files were ignored (mostly just temp files and other Windows-specific esoterica) because they are not supported by the standard backup process. Seams to me this device is just about perfect for someone wanting a no-fuss backup procedure at a reasonable price.

5 of 5 Excellent overall- But the button light is BRIGHT 4/9/2008
Steve from Whitestone, NY
Excellent overall quality and value! But- the 'one touch button' light on the front is too BRIGHT. It's like having an extra night-light in my room. Otherwise, no problems- definitely worth buying.

5 of 5 Great external HD 4/8/2008
from Lansing, MI
Can't beat the price on this one especially since I got the $50 off from getting a revolution card. Opened up the packaging and plugged right in my home desktop PC with XP. I copied over some data to be backed up very quickly. Copied some data over from a home laptop with Vista so it was backed up as well. I also used this at work a couple times now to transfer some disc images back and forth. Transfer rates seem quick. It was recognized by XP and Vista right away. Enclosure looks nice. A little bulky maybe but seems very solid. Also the white light(button) on the front is kind of handy when using backup software. It would be nice to see this in a color of some sort but that's no biggie. Overall the performance and value of this setup is great. Perfect for backing up data or anything else you might need to do with it.

5 of 5 Good price no problems 4/7/2008
from Glendale, WI
I bought two of these to back up my daughter's laptops, hoping that they would start to do regular backups themselves. It was very easy to set up and very easy to program so they now are using it without prompting from me. No problems so far.

4.3 of 5 No problems, works well 4/6/2008
Bob from Lombard, Il
I use this drive to house various files. Set-up was easy and only took a few minutes (Mac users, keep in mind that you'll need to reformat the drive before you use it). It's worked reliably since I installed it. Good drive.

5 of 5 Excellent but no password protect. 4/6/2008
Al Roosov from Warsaw, VA
This is my second external hard drive from Maxtor. My first was an 80GB one touch. They are both easy to use and work well. The 80 GB unit has a password protect feature which prevents anyone without the password from seeing what is on it. I assumed this 250GB drive would have the same feature but it does not which is clearly stated in the users manual. I feel this feature or lack there of should have been stated in the specifications available before purchase.

5 of 5 Maxtor Ext. Hard Drive 4/6/2008
Kurt Hammerschmidt from Milton, Fl
This product was easy to install. Practically did it itself. The only fault I have is that I thought it would back up my entire C drive but it only backs up the files on that drive. Not the programs.

5 of 5 Easy, fast, great! 3/17/2008
from Keller, TX
This is my first external hard drive. I wanted to be sure I did not lose my files when I get my new laptop and this works great for that. I had my files backing up within 5 minutes of unpacking it from the box. I thought I would be able to backup the entire drive, but it does not backup system files. I also thought I might be able to run iTunes using the backup drive as a primary, however I didn't figure out how to get that to work. But, it works for the primary reason I bought it and was very simple and easy to use. I would recommend it highly.

5 of 5 A remarkably pleasant surprise 12/18/2007
Ron from Huntington Station, NY
This external hard-drive is faster than the internal hard drive! No bull - Reading & writing on this from other computers in our LAN is significantly faster than reading and writing to the host's "C" drive. It's awesome performance, and it is truly (no reservations or qualifications) plug-and-play. Very impressive.

4.7 of 5 Easy to use, excellent value 12/17/2007
JHef from Columbus, Ohio
This is the first external drive that I have purchased. Needed something to backup a number of my computers to on a regular basis. Plugged it in, software installed very easily, and I was backing up my system in minutes from unboxing it. Add that to the great "black friday" price (79.99) I received from Buy.com and this was a great purchase. Only negative I can give it is that the software could be a little more flexible in chossing what to back up with regards to different folders and such. But I would still buy it again, I am using other backup software that I already was using prior.

4.7 of 5 good drive but not totally satisfied 12/11/2007
olive from Arlington, VA
I have the 500GB of this drive bought on Black friday so pricing was good. The drive overall runs with an OK speed. it's easy to use - plug and play and if you want to install the One touch software, it's easy also. The design is cheap with the white LED light, and so is the packaging. The only complaint I have for this drive's performance is that sometimes the computer would not recognize the drive so I have to unplug and plug the power cord. This is probably due to the fact that it does not have a on/off switch. Other than that, tt is quite silent. Bottom line is that the drive is good for backup documents, pics/music
